===Introduction===

When City of Villains was preparing for release, the community was asked for input to help identify information in the game manual that needed to be updated.  Since this would be the first update to the game manual since CoH release, there was a lot of material that needed to be covered, and the community tackled it with great enthusiasm.  As a result, the CoV manual was pretty much up to date at initial release.
+

Fast forward to July 2007.  While introducing a friend to the game, I realized just how out of date the game manual is at this point.  I was able to put together a rough set of links to various articles here at Paragon Wiki to get him a pretty broad idea of how the game works, but I find that there is still a lot of info in the game manuals that is not covered here.
+
 
+
So, I've decided I want to do something about this.  My new long-term project will be to create what will essentially be a living, breathing game manual to be maintained by the community at large here at Paragon Wiki.  For the most part, I'll probably just start with a table of contents that links to other existing articles where appropriate.  As the project grows, I'll start filling in the gaps with information from the game manuals that I'll update as needed.

And of course, when I say "I", I really mean "we" because I'll welcome any help I can get.

For now, I'll be working on the main table of contents in my user space until I think it's ready to be split into an article all its own.

===Getting Started===

To enter City of Heroes or City of Villains, complete the following steps:

1.  Install the game to your hard drive.
+

2.  Double-click on the shortcut on your desktop or use the Windows Start menu to launch the Updater.
+

3.  Each time launch the game it will bring up the Updater to check for and (if there are any) automatically load any updates posted by the design team.  Follow the on-screen prompts to proceed to load the game.

5.  Select the server on which you wish to play.  When selecting a server, check the colored bubbles next to the server name. The more bubbles, the more people that are currently on the server. If a server has too many people already, you won’t be able to choose it.

6.  When you select your server, you may choose a character you’ve already created and begin play, or you may choose to create a new character. You may create several characters on any given server. You may also delete a previously created character to free up a character slot. Note that once a character is deleted, he or she is irretrievably gone.

7.  If selecting an existing character, click on "Enter Paragon City" or "Enter the Rogue Isles" to proceed.

The choice of alignment is the single most important decision you will make for your character.

If you have only either City of Heroes or City of Villains, this decision is easy since you will only have one option available.  If you have both City of Heroes and City of Villains, you will have to decide on whether your character will be a Hero or a Villain.

Will you confront super villains, aliens, madmen, criminals, and other fearsome foes in Paragon City?  Will you take on the responsibility of protecting the sprawling metropolis and its citizens from the clutches of evil?

Or will you choose to take part in the fight for survival of the fittest on the Rogue Isles? Will you commit heists, kidnappings, and infiltrations on your way to fulfill your destiny as a legendary arch-criminal?

This adds an extra layer of complexity, since you must simultaneously control your character and the minions he commands. This makes the Mastermind daunting, but it also makes it one of the more powerful archetypes in the game and makes it a one-man group.

The Mastermind archetype is played much differently than the others, which is primarily due to its ability to summon what are commonly known as "henchmen". These henchmen come in one of five types – Robotics, Necromancy, Ninjas, Mercenaries, and Thugs.

Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses but, more importantly, is how these pets are controlled by the player. As you have to control both your character and the henchmen, you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times—a Mastermind without henchmen is easy prey.

The Masterminds have an inherent power, Supremacy, which imparts a bonus to their Henchmen’s Accuracy and Damage.  In addition, when any Henchmen within range of Supremacy are in the Defensive/Follow state, they impart a bodyguard effect and will help to absorb damage inflicted upon the Mastermind.}}

  • The Paragon Wiki hero supergroup exists on the Champion server. Though not very active, the SG was formed with the intent of allowing us to easily gather a group of heroes together in one spot to collect data that might require teaming for Paragon Wiki.

This is the first Wiki project I've worked on. I've learned quite a bit about syntax and formatting and all that, but I'm sure there are some things I haven't tried yet.

When I'm not logged into City of, I'm typically either at work designing software, surfing the CoH boards, or both.

Typically I play on Triumph, but our SG organization has satellite branches on Justice and Pinnacle, as well.
