Overview

Temporary powers are powers that a hero or villain may only use for a short time. The three main types of temporary powers are powers that last for a designated amount of time, a designated amount of uses, or until a specific action is accomplished. Some temporary powers may fall into more than one category; for example, powers that run out when either a specific action is accomplished or a certain amount of time, whichever is sooner.

Powers

The following are temporary powers obtainable in City of Heroes and City of Villains.


Temporary WarWolfWhistle.png Amy's Ward

Amy's Ward Summoned.jpg

This small amulet, given to you by the young witch Katie, will allow you to summon the astral projection of Amy Jonsson five times. You may only manifest one projection of Amy at a time. If you try to summon a second while the first is still active, the amulet will fail and loose a charge.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the final mission in Katie Hannon's Task Force.

Temp Ranged Heavy.png Arachnoid Gas

This gas is highly toxic, and is specifically designed to overcome Arachnoid resistances.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Clear out Arachnoid tunnels mission assigned by Terrence Dobbs.

Temporary SelfBuffDefense.png Arachnos Power Shield

Arachnos Power Shield.jpg

The Arachnos Power Shield projects a protective force field around you, giving you good damage resistance. The power cell it uses lasts 10 minutes of constant use.

To obtain this temporary power, accept the Exact vengeance against the Knives mission from Arbiter Daos.

Good at close range. Fires a cone of buckshot pellets and can knock some foes down.

To obtain this temporary power, accept the Take down Agent Deathstalker mission from Arbiter Daos.

Temporary Warburg MegaBuff.png Biological Mutagens

This strike widely disperses beneficial mutagens. Friendly characters in the area of effect gain an increase in regeneration and damage abilities. You may only use this ability once.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Missile Launch Mission in Warburg.

Temporary RangeHeavyDamage.png Blackwand

This is the Blackwand, a foul magical artifact created by the Archmage Tarixus. This black metal wand feels cold in your hand, and glows with dark arcane energies. The Blackwand may be used 10 times before it is exhausted.

To obtain this temporary power, complete Forge the Blackwand mission assigned by Archmage Tarixus.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Save Waylon McCrane from the Tuatha mission assigned by Kelly Nemmers.

Temporary WarWolfWhistle.png Build Snow Beast

Snowbeast Summoned.jpg

Creates one Snow Beast to do your bidding. Snow Beasts desire nothing more than to freeze everything they come into contact with. You only have 1 Snow Beast and he will last for 5 minutes before melting. You cannot bring your snow beast across zones.

This temporary power was a rare prize gained by opening presents during the Winter Event 2005.

Temporary Warburg DebuffDefense.png Chemical Burn

The toxins released in this strike lower the accuracy and damage resistance of all hostile targets over a considerable area of effect. You may only use this ability once.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Missile Launch Mission in Warburg.

Temporary ResonanceDisrupter.png Combat Invisibility

You blend into your environment and can only be seen at extremely close range. Even if discovered, you are hard to see and have a bonus to defense to melee and ranged attacks. If, however, you attacke while using this power, you will be discovered and will loose your Invisibility and some of your defense bonus. Combat Invisibility has a total of 30 minutes usage time.

To obtain this power, complete the Patrol Siren's Call mission from Warzone Agent Brinson or Warzone Operative Massey

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Retrieve the stolen weapons from the Freakshow mission assigned by Andrew Fiore, Claire Childress, Jake Kim, Lt. Col. Hugh McDougal, Vic Garland or Wilma Peterson

Temporary WarWolfWhistle.png Coral Amulet

This amulet of living coral is formed from a piece of the Eye of the Leviathan, a gargantuan creature in the Temple of the Waters. This coral amulet can be used to summon coral guardians to fight for you.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Operative Renault Strike Force. It is one possible reward.

Temp Melee Moderate.png Coral Hammer

This hammer of living coral is formed from a piece of the Eye of the Leviathan, a gargantuan creature in the Temple of the Waters. This coral hammer can be used to smite your enemies with devastating effect. You can use the Coral Hammer for three days.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Operative Renault Strike Force. It is one possible reward.

Temporary ConeRangeModerateDamage.png Coral Shards

These shards of living coral are taken from the Eye of the Leviathan, a gargantuan creature in the Temple of the Waters. These magical coral shards can be hurled at your enemies with devastating effect. You can use the coral shards for three days before the magic fades from them.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Operative Renault Strike Force. It is one possible reward.

Temporary CreyNarcotic.png Crey Narcotic

The Crey scientists have injected you with a narcotic that slows your movement speed, attack speed, and endurance recovery! After completing your mission, you should seek help from your contact. If you cannot reach your contact, the effect should wear off.

To obtain this temporary power, obtain the Investigate the Crey lab mission assigned by Janet Kellum.

Temporary CryoniteArmor.png Cryonite Armor

As a thank you, the company has given you the opportunity to be the first to test this technology in the field. You have enough power to operate the Cryonite Armor for 1 hour of on time.

To obtain this power, return to the contact after completing the Stop the Sky Raiders before they can make off with Balsim's designs mission from Barry Gosford, John Strobel, Justin Greene, Oswald Cuthbert, Rondel Jackson, or Wilson Eziquerra.

Temporary WarWolfWhistle.png Demon Box

This is a small carved box made of wood stained black carved with intricate sigils, while silver hinges and clasp keep the box closed. It trembles slightly in your hand and you hear dark whispers in your mind. The Demon Box can call upon the powers of darkness to snare your foes with living darkness from the netherworld. If you are of Magic origin, you can unleash the demonic minions within the box instead!
You may call upon the power of the Demon Box three times before the wailing demons within it are drained of all their dark energies.

To obtain this power, defeat Pandora in the mission Defeat Pandora and Minions from Hardcase.

It's hard to believe this flimsy device can be as powerful as Skipper LeGrange claims. According to him, it measures the paranormal qualities of it's subjects, often with dramatic results. The Divining Rod has 20 charges.

Temporary ElectromagneticGrenades.png Electromagnetic Grenades

These Electromagnetic Grenades, found in a Council base, generate a massive pulse of electromagnetic energy that is especially effective against robots. You have 30 grenades.

To obtain this temporary power complete the Seek hidden Council supply depots mission from Lars Hansen, or by completing a raid secondary mission in a Mayhem Mission.

Temporary EMPGlove.png EMP Glove

This glove can deliver a high power, focused Electromagnetic Pulse to a target. Deals good damage and can drain Endurance from the target. Very effective against machines of all types. The EMP Glove has 30 charges.

Temporary CenterOfTheWheel.png Empowered Center of the Wheel

This metal rod has been empowered by the Banished Pantheon. While carrying it, you can summon a Sword of Flame.

To obtain this temporary power open one of the treasure chests in the Prevent the Banished Pantheon from completing the ritual mission assigned by Andrea Mitchell, Cain Royce, Dr. Cheng, Josef Keller, Oliver Haak, or Piper Irving.

Duration 90 Minutes in game or upon return to contact

Temporary LinchpinOfTheWheel.png Empowered Linchpin of the Wheel

The linchpin of the Wheel of Destruction has been empowered by the Banished Pantheon. While carrying it, you can summon a cloak of flames to protect you from harm. While active, you take less damage from Smashing, Lethal, Energy, and Negative Energy attacks.

To obtain this temporary power open one of the treasure chests in the Prevent the Banished Pantheon from completing the ritual mission assigned by Andrea Mitchell, Cain Royce, Dr. Cheng, Josef Keller, Oliver Haak, or Piper Irving.

Duration 90 Minutes in game or upon return to contact

You have been enchanted by the Crystal of Serafina, granting you amazing powers of the mind. You may use this power to protect those around you from psychic damage, and to add psychic damage to their attacks. You may use this power 10 times before it fades.

To obtain this temporary power complete Ice Mistral's Strike Force and defeating Archus.

The Fire Fighter 3000, developed by Positron, uses a potassium bicarbonate powder to smother flames. It has 15 charges.

To obtain this temporary power, visit Chief Williams standing next to a burning building in Steel Canyon during the Hellion Arson zone event.

These military issue non-lethal grenades explode with a concussive force that leaves all affected targets very vulnerable. Their accuracy and defense will be severely reduced. You have 6 grenades.

To obtain this temporary power accept the Go to the streets and defeat a few Skulls mission from Juan Jimenez, Linda Summers, or Ron Hughes.

Temporary TargetedPBAoEConfuse.png Force of the Earth

This vial of the intelligent bacteria has been modified. Now, instead of creating a unifying psychic bond between Devouring Earth, infected DE creatures will attack their own allies.

To obtain this power, accept the Defeat Zenflower and free the Devouring Earth from her control mission from Vernon von Grun.

Temporary FreakshowDisguise.png Freakshow Disguise

This suit can cause you to look like a member of the Freakshow without actually undergoing the hazardous cybernetic surgery. You can pass completely unnoticed by the Freakshow. However, if you take any aggressive actions, your cover will be blown, and the diguise will no longer be effective. Disables the use of Stealth related powers while worn. This disguise will last one hour of real time.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Recover Stolen Chameleon Suit mission assigned by Wilma Peterson. Note that the mission description incorrectly states that the temporary power lasts only 15 minutes, but that the power description contains the correct time of one hour or until you talk to your contact after completing the mission. Also note that the stealth is effective against all enemies, not just Freakshow.

Inherent BlasterDesperation.png Frenzy Mutagen

This is a metal cylinder with a biohazard symbol stenciled on it and a dermal injector on one end. It contains a special mutagen that increases your aggressiveness, allowing you to attack faster and stronger. There are 3 doses.

To obtain this temporary power, accept the Eliminate Ace McKnight mission assigned by Captain Mako.

Temporary GeneticRestabilizer.png Genetic Restabilizer

This device can stop mutations and even begin a reversal of the process in certain cases. The effect, however, can temporarily render a victim helpless and unable to defend himself. The Genetic Restabiliser has 12 charges.

To obtain this power, accept the Test the Genetic Restabilizer on the Lost mission from Kirsten Woods or Polly Cooper.

This is a special anti-spirit bomb used to destroy ethereal entities like ghosts and spirits. You have enough for 6 charges.

Temporary AntigravityMatrix.png Holiday Rocket Pack

This jet pack allows you to fly for a short period. If you attack a target while this pack is on, your flight speed will be temporarily reduced to Hover speed. This Rocket Pack will last for 30 days.

This power was awarded with the Longbow Reservist Badge for the Winter Event 2005.

Temporary HolyShotgunShells.png Holy Shotgun Shells

Tobias Hansen gave you these holy shotgun shells to aid you in your efforts against the Banished Pantheon. These blessed shotgun shells do extra damage to Undead villains. Use them wisely, for you have only 75 shells.

To obtain this power, you must accept the Rid the mausoleum of the Banished Pantheon mission from Tobias Hansen. The additional damage against Banished Pantheon does not apply to the Shamens or Totums.

Temporary ResonanceDisrupter.png Hyper Phase

You can phase shift to become out of sync with normal space. Although you do not become completely invisible, you are translucent and hard to see. You are intangible, and cannot affect or be affected by those in normal space. While hyper phased, your run and flight speed are increased. Cannot be used with rest. Hyper phase has a total of 30 minutes usage time.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Patrol 6 waypoints in Warburg mission.

Temporary ResonanceDisrupter.png Hyper Stealth

You blend into your environment and can only be seen at very close range. Even if discovered, you are hard to see and have a bonus to Defense to melee and ranged attacks. If, however, you attack while using this power, you will be discovered and will lose your Stealth and some of your Defense bonus. While Stealthy, your movement is Slowed. Hyper Stealth has a total of 30 minutes usage time.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Patrol Bloody Bay mission.

Temporary MedKit.png Idol of Lughebu

When you rescued Suzanne Trent, she gave you this idol she found in the Pantheon's lair. While carrying it, you have the ability to drain the life from nearby foes, increasing your own Hit Points. The idol must be returned to the MAGI vault within 24 hours.

To obtain this temporary power, rescue Edith Frazier in the Find Edith Frazier mission from Josef Keller or Dr. Cheng.

Temp Melee Moderate.png Infected Anti-Serum

This dispenser is filled with an Infected Anti-Serum created by Doctor Creed. When used on an Infected, it causes an explosive chemical reaction. The Anti-Serum lasts only 15 minutes before the chemicals become inert.

To obtain this temporary power, start the Doctor Creed's Field Test mission from Doctor Creed.

Temp Melee Heavy.png Iron Blade

According to Buck Salinger, it's a well known fact that Fey creatures such as the Fir Bolg, Red Caps and Tuatha fear iron more than any other substance. This Iron Blade you recovered may be of some use against them. You may carry it for 3 days before returning it to the village.

To obtain this temporary power, complete the Recover the Red Cap's iron hoard mission from Buck Salinger.

The Fire Fighter 4000 has a longer range than the 3000, Positron's earlier model. It also puts out flames faster. Unfortunately, it only has 9 charges.

To obtain this temporary power, visit the fire chief, Chief Williams standing next to a burning building in Steel Canyon.

Temporary LethargyInducer.png Lethargy Inducer

This invention can cause a target to feel tired and worn down, reducing the speed of their attacks. The Lethargy Inducer has 20 charges.

To obtain this temporary power accept the Take some territory back from the Tsoo mission from Cho Ge, Karen Parker, Sgt. Suzanne Bernhard, or Warren Trudeau. (Levels 15-19)

To obtain this temporary power, complete Retrieve Loa Bone mission assigned by Mr. Bocor.

Temporary ManifoldResonator.png Manifold Resonator

After Teleporting, you will remain intangible for a while. During this time, you cannot activate any other powers. As you slowly phase into normal space, you will remain partial visible for a brief time. If you attack while partially visible, your accuracy will be reduced, but your defense will be improved.

To obtain this power, you must click on the Vault glowie in the Stop the Council from stealing Rikti Technology mission from Ashwin Lannister or Laurie Pennington.

Temporary MedKit.png Med Kit

This Med Kit allows you to heal ¼ of your hit points. The Med Kit has 8 uses.

To obtain this power, you must rescue the paramedic hostage in the Stop the Trolls from hitting the party from Jake Montoya.

Eros has fashioned a version of Ambrosia from the waters of the Well of the Furies, which he has dubbed 'Nectar'. Eros' Nectar can be used up to 20 times on opponents to beguile them, effectively placating and confusing them

To obtain this temporary power, you had to complete the Bring the girdle of Aphrodite back to Ganymede mission assigned by Ganymede and the Get a hero to the cauldron and destroy it mission assigned by Scratch.

You must be in close proximity to the meteorite to extract the ore. Extracting the ore is interruptible, so if you are hit, you will need to try again.
