Cascade Six is the result of just under 300 years of scientific experimentation into “managed genetic development” as part of the Cascade Project. The original Cascade was the first successful subject of selective breeding – people of influence and power in society, bred with known psychics and empaths to produce a powerful member of society’s elite who combined leadership abilities with the ability to delve into the motivations and aspirations of those around them in order to influence and control them. As scientific breakthroughs rapidly affected genetic manipulation, the Cascade experiment took bold steps to strengthen its subjects. Cascade Two was the result of biological techniques available at the time with selective breeding, to produce a powerful telepath.
Cascade Three was the first Cascade to exhibit useable telekinetic potential and this power was enhanced in Cascade Four using chemical and radiation treatment. This in turn strengthened the Cascade line producing stronger humans with greater resilience and longevity. Cascade Five improved on the formula with gene splicing and IVF treatment, anchoring improved psychokinetic potential to an XX genome pairing – the first female Cascade. With Cascade Six, the experiment included complex DNA manipulation and continuous gene therapy throughout his pre-teen years. Current demonstrations of power prove that his control of psychokinetic energy has extended and mutated naturally through his teens to include pyrokinesis at an almost cellular level, as well as the Cascade array of telekinetic, telepathic and empathic projection powers. This has led to control of what Cascade Six has dubbed his own personal Phoenix Force, and the Cascade Project are currently investigating whether Six has mutated naturally, heightening the powers given to him, whether it’s an unexpected side-effect of the Cascade experiments, or some as yet unknown external factor.
As society has changed, with war and invasion affecting Paragon City and it’s inhabitants, the Cascade Project has moved away from it’s original caveat of social and political influence to producing a subject capable of contributing to it’s survival. The programme had adapted well to these changes, and as Cascade Six’s power grows, he demonstrates repeatedly his dedication to freedom and justice, his powers often turning the tide in favour of his teammates.

Dr Thomas Shand-Kidd was a middling research team leader for MAGI, recruited upon completion of his PhD. Thomas was excavating an idol of unusual origin, discovered during a dig at a temple ruin. Both idol and location were obviously significant, as the camp was attacked by a small group of Circle of Thorns guards led by a mage called Khonsus. During the melee, Thomas did what any young archaeologist would do in defence of a magical icon…he swallowed it. In the absence of the artefact, Thomas was able to convince Khonsus that the icon had been shipped to MAGI already. Examination upon return to MAGI headquarters revealed that the icon had somehow bonded itself to Thomas’ internal organs had become part of him. Thomas discovered that it had granted him the ability to affect kinetic energy in a variety of ways. Thomas has fast become an exemplary MAGI field agent, sent to retrieve magical items from the hands of any group that would use them to evil ends.

Born Alicia Benedict, daughter of William Benedict, owner of Benedict Technologies, Psy Borg was a civilian scientist until the first Rikti Invasion. During the invasion, she was injured – her upper body crushed by one of the aliens. Fearful that she would not be able to move her arms again, her father invested massive resources into finding a way to help her regain her mobility. The surgery was a long and arduous process and the cybernetic implants along with her seething rage at the Rikti, awoke in Alicia powers that had, until then, remained dormant. Alicia came out of the hospital stronger, faster and more capable of doing what her father feared the most – taking the fight back to the Rikti to have her revenge. Her work as a hero in Paragon City has led to Benedict Technologies officially sanctioning her work, and Psy Borg now completes essential field tests of the latest technologies on the company’s behalf, ensuring that Benedict Tech release the best firmware and wetware.

Amber Connors is a member of a small and mysterious groups of people called “The Volition” who are aware of Kheldians’ presence in their natural state and revere them and their culture. They believe that they are blessed by union with Peacebringer symbionts, and that it is an honour to be accepted and chosen to be a host. Amber trained to become her physical, mental and emotional peak, more than proving her worth during the Trials of Volition, and her reward was selection by Ambrosia, a powerful Kheldian Peacebringer, to be her host. During the Ritual of Sharing, she offered her human form as host as long as she drew breath, to defend the Peacebrings and their way of existence, to protect innocents against the parasitic nature of the Nictus, and to use the powers she would be granted for the benefit of an otherwise unaware population. The union of their two individual beings triggered a gestalt effect, instantly turning her hair, eyes and fingertips purest white.

Andrew “Rew” Carmell’s powers developed in his early-teens – telepathic and psychokinetic powers confused and overwhelmed the adolescent, and his parents turned to the Psi-Division of the PPD for help after police were called to an unusual incident – calls from concerned neighbours reported everything from a rampaging super villain to child abuse, but what the responding police officers found was a scared 14 year old, channelling his own fear and that of his parents, picked up telepathically, into uncontrolled bursts of telekinesis that had demolished most of the family home. The outburst had sent the family into the only defensive actions they knew – how to survive an earthquake…his two brothers were found huddled in the bathtub, and his parents were wedged into the fireplace trying to get as much cover as possible from the whirling debris.
The officers radioed for assistance and, unusually, it was the psych division that responded rather than a superhero team. The Psi-Officers soothed and calmed Rew mentally and were able to dampen his powers, before they attempted to teach him a degree of control over his new found abilities. Rew showed such an early aptitude for focus and discipline, that they sponsored his education, and provided ongoing training to help him control and strengthen his powers, and straight out of college, where he studied Law and Psychology, he signed up to join the Paragon Police Department. Now, at the end of his training, Defiant’s powers have been strengthened to allow him to psychically assault his opponents – with Telekinesis, bolts of Telepathic power and bio-manipulation at his disposal, he’s been assigned to work with the New Guardians, to help strengthen the bond between the PPD and the heroes of Paragon City.
