Many of the weapons, equipment, and vehicles found in the hands of the City of Heroes/City of Villains groups and characters are real, though an equal number of them are fictional in origin (but likely based on real-world equipment). This article will not cover clearly fictional items such as Malta Hercules titans, Rikti pylons, or Gold Bricker sonic weapons. This article will also not cover common tools (shovels, pipewrenches, lumberjack axes, etc.) used as weapons unless there is a significance to them within the scope of the game's story.

Real-world
Axes
The axe is an implement that has been used for millennia to shape, split and cut wood or as a weapon. The axe has many forms and specialized uses but generally consists of an axe head with a helve (handle).
Weapon Name | In-game Name | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Labrys | Battle Axe (also Legacy version) | The term for a double-headed axe, the Labrys is of Greek origin. The "Vikingesque" designs on the blade would not be found on a labrys, which tended to be unornamented. | Luddites, Warriors, Battle Axe-enabled player characters |
Tomahawk | Tomahawk | A type of axe native to North America, traditionally resembling a hatchet with a straight shaft. Tomahawks were general purpose tools used by Native Americans and European Colonials alike, and often employed as a hand-to-hand or a thrown weapon. Within the scope of the game, enemies using this weapon tend to use them as melee weapon, not as a projectile. | Banished Pantheon, Halloween Event Zombies |
Bows, Crossbows and Projectiles
The bow is an ancient weapon that projects arrows powered by the former's elasticity; it was one of the first ranged weapons or hunting tools which used mechanical principles, instead of relying solely on the strength of its user. There are several different types in the game.
Weapon Name | In-game Name | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Composite bow | Composite Bow (also Legacy version) | A bow made from disparate materials laminated together, usually applied under tension. Different materials are used in order to take advantage of the properties of each material. The main advantage of composite bows over self bows (made from a single piece of wood) is their combination of smaller size with high power. The main version of the bow used by several factions, this weapon is also available to both heroes and villains choosing the Archery or Trick Arrow skill sets. Lastly, this bow is available as a temporary power. | Various |
Compound bow | Compound Bow | A modern bow using cables and pulleys to bend the limbs. The limbs of a compound bow are much stiffer than other types of bows, making the compound bow more energy efficient than other bows, but requiring the assistance of the pulley system to draw the string back comfortably. The compound bow is little-affected by changes of temperature and humidity and gives superior accuracy, velocity, and distance in comparison to other bows, though in-game these issues are not factors. This weapon is available as a custom weapon. | Archery player characters, Trick Arrow player characters. |
English longbow | Longbow | A type of bow that is tall (roughly equal to the height of a person who uses it), is not significantly recurved and has relatively narrow limbs, that are circular or D-shaped in cross section. It will normally allow its user a fairly long draw, at least to the jaw. This type of longbow was famed for a long range and high accuracy, but not both at the same time. English use of longbows was effective against the French during the Hundred Years' War, particularly at the start of the war in the battles of Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356), and most famously at the Battle of Agincourt (1415). Lastly, this weapon is the namesake of the Longbow faction within the game. This bow is also available through weapons customization. | Archery player characters, Trick Arrow player characters. |
Mongol bow | Mongolian Bow | A recurved composite bow used by the Mongols and renowned for its power, accuracy and range, it was lauded for having the longest range for ranged weapons until the invention of the modern breech-loading firearms in the early 20th Century. Estimates for the Mongol bow give it a draw force comparable to the English longbow; however, due to a better design, the Mongol bow has a range longer than that of the longbow. The bows were routinely employed by Mongol horse archers. Mongol bows are still used in Siberia and were common in the early 20th century. This bow is another custom weapon choice. | Archery player characters, Trick Arrow player characters. |
The crossbow is a bow mounted on a stock that shoots projectiles, often called bolts. Crossbows played a significant role in the warfare of North Africa, Europe and Asia. There are two types known in the game.
Weapon Name | In-game Name | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Pistol crossbow | Crossbow | A smaller, handheld version. As it is a simple mesh (and may be a modification of one of the pistol meshes), it is unclear if a reference was used. | Circle of Thorns, Warriors |
Recurve crossbow | Crossbow | This is the larger, rifle-like version. This variant has tips curving away from the archer; its bent limbs have a longer draw length than an equivalent straight-limbed bow, giving more acceleration to the projectile and less hand shock. The model used in the game seems to be based on a crossbow with a pull-lever reloading mechanism. | Circle of Thorns, Luddites |
Projectile weapons usually refer to weapons or any other objects thrown or otherwise directed to enemies. In many cases, these weapons could be used for slashing and stabbing in addition to being thrown.

Dart | Multiple types | Darts are missile weapons, designed to fly such that a sharp, often weighted point will strike first. Darts are primarily used by villain groups, though heroes (and villain) player characters with Science and Technology origins have access to the Tranquilizer dart and Taser dart skills, respectively. | Various |
Shuriken | Shuriken | A traditional Japanese concealed weapon that was generally used for throwing, and sometimes stabbing or slashing an opponent. Though shuriken were not always shaped in the ubiquitous "ninja star" design, it is commonplace in modern times and available to anyone. Shuriken are in use by several hero and villain factions; this power is also available to weapon masters. | Various |
Throwing knife | Throwing knife | The art of knife throwing was first used in martial or in hunting applications. and has been incorporated into many martial disciplines. Unlike regular knives, throwing knives are made of a solid one-piece construction. Though not common in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles, some factions do use knife throwing as a combat technique, as well as Natural-origin characters. | Carnival of Shadows, Circle of Thorns, Snakes, Natural-origin player characters |
Disabling Weapons
So-called "disabling weapons" were meant not so much to injure or kill, but rather to stun or impede the target.
Weapon Name | In-game Name | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Caltrops | Caltrops | A weapon made up of two (or more) sharp nails or spines arranged in such a manner that one of them always points upward from a stable base. Not meant to be a ranged weapons, these are thrown a short distance to slow down foes. Caltrops are an ancient weapon, used as early as the 4rd century BC. Several factions in the game use this weapon as well as weapons masters and device users. | Various |
Taser | Taser | An electroshock weapon meant to stun a targeted subject from a distance. The model in the game is similar to that of the X26 taser. It should be noted that the version that would likely be used by Malta and device-enabled characters would be the military-issued M26 taser (which is pistol-shaped) rather than the compact flashlight design of the civilian X26. A variant of this weapon, the taser dart, is available to characters of Technology origin. | Malta Operatives, Device-using player characters |
Equipment
Weapon Name | In-game Name | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Laser sight | NA | A small, usually visible-light laser placed on a handgun or rifle aligned to emit a beam parallel to the barrel. Used for aiming, there are several versions of this equipment. While the ones used by Council and Fifth Column robots and some firearms are built-in, the compact version attached to various other weapons is likely a diode-pumped solid-state laser | Various |
Night vision goggles | NA | An optical instrument that allows images to be produced in levels of light approaching total darkness. These may also be costume choices for player characters, though there are no in-game factors that cause or affect use other than cosmetic purposes. | Knives of Artemis, Malta Operatives |
Pickelhaube | NA | A spiked helmet worn in the 19th and 20th century, most closely associated with the Prussian military. This is the standard helmet for many of Nemesis' troops. | Nemesis |
Incendiary Weapons
- Dynamite: an explosive based on the explosive potential of nitroglycerin, usually found compressed into a cylindrical shape and wrapped in paper. Several of these, tied together and lit with a fuse, are the preferred weapons of Scrapyarder demolitionists. Commonly used by: Scrapyarders.
- Grenade: a small hand-held anti-personnel weapon designed to be thrown and then explode after a short time. There are several types used in the game:
- Percussion grenade: meant to do damage to opponents, this version detonates on impact with a target. Commonly used by: Council, Fifth Column.
- Stun grenade: also known as "flashbang grenades", these are used to confuse, disorient, or distract a potential threat and can seriously degrade combat effectiveness of affected personnel for up to a minute. Note that a slightly weaker version of this weapon, the Flashbang grenade, is available as a temporary power. Commonly used by: Malta, temporary-powered player characters.
- Molotov cocktail: a glass bottle containing gasoline fuel with a fuse consisting of a fuel-soaked rag held in place by the bottle's stopper. An easy-to-make incendiary weapon used by many low-level gangs. Commonly used by: Hellions, Mastermind thugs.
Maces, Clubs and Hammers

Beedle Mallet | Carnival Mallet | A large wooden mallet with a circular pine head, with rounded ends about 15-18 inches in diameter, and a handle about 3 feet long used for paving stones into position when bedding. Beedle mallets are now obsolete, having been replaced by vulcanized rubber mallets, though they are still used in carnival/circus games and are used as a stock gag in animation/anime. Considering the use of the Beedle mallet as a weapon in game, these are probably also modified for "dead-shot" (the head containing a hollow internal cavity filled with steel or lead shot, allowing for a more powerful blow to be delivered). | Carnival of Shadows, Mace-enabled player characters |
Sai | Sai | A pointed, rod-shaped baton, with two long, unsharpened projections (called tsuba) attached to the handle. Though in truth this Okinawan weapon is more a baton than a blade, the game versions are bladed and treated as short swords. | Chimera's ninjas, Mastermind ninjas, Tsoo Dual-bladed player characters |
Shillelagh | Shillelagh | A wooden cudgel, typically made from a stout knotty stick with a large knob on the end, that is associated with Ireland in folklore. Within the scope of the game, these are used by the Luddites, though it is available to players as a weapon customization as well. | Luddites, Mace-enabled player characters |
Vehicles
- Helicopters: the helicopters used by Longbow and Vanguard forces are of two different makes:
- PPD Police Vehicles: Paragon City's police forces use several familiar vehicles to carry out their duties.
- Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor: though not officially referred to in such in the game, this vehicle, used by many North American police agencies, is most likely the model referenced for the standard police cruiser.
- PPD SWAT van: These vehicles are made by several different manufacturers but share similar designs, the most common of which is the Ford Econoline. The game uses a generic mesh for this vehicle, making it difficult to determine the model the developers used or if one was used at all.
Fictional
Axes
In-game Name | Real-world Influence | Notes | Commonly Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Impervium Axe | Throwing axe | Though the impervium axe could be designed after a modern, stainless-steel axe or hatchet, the design of the axe itself implies that it is an enlarged version of a throwing axe, likely that of the hurlbat style of throwing axe. This weapon is available as a weapon customization option. | Battle Axe-enabled player characters |
Bows and Projectiles
- Arcane wooden bow: while it is possible that a civilization may have had a bow of this nature, nothing of such a design is known to exist. It should be noted that the design of the bow shares some similarities to the Flatbow, which is of the same general shape and was often designed by the societies that created them. Commonly used by: Bow-wielding player characters.
- Exploding shuriken: While the Bo-shuriken design would lend itself better to this than the ninja star, neither would be very stable for such use. In use by several hero and villain factions, this power is also available to weapons masters as well. Commonly used by: various.
- Wrist-mounted crossbow: while the design, built into the costumes of the Knives of Artemis' combatants, is rather striking, such a mounting would be both impractical in use and would lead to long-term wrist and arm injury, reducing the combatant's effectiveness. Commonly used by: Knives of Artemis.
Disabling Weapons
- Hand grenades: the following are fictional variants of grenades:
- Sonic grenade: similar in intent to the above mentioned stun grenade, this version simply emits a loud sound, distracting (lowering resistance) of the target. In real-world applications, this is already built into the stun grenade in addition to its blinding properties. Commonly used by: Gold Brickers.
- Web grenade: a hand-held grenade variant which on contact releases a webbing compound designed to entangle (immobilize) an opponent. Similar weapons have been developed for launchers, though not on a hand-held scale and with the intent to completely ensnare, not entangle, a target. Used by several factions in the game as well as Device-enabled player characters, this weapon is also available as a temporary power. Commonly used by: various.

- Equipment
- The helicopters used by Longbow to go and come from disputed (PvP) zones seem to be russian Mil Mi-8. Besides, during one of the missions from Peter Themari in City of Villains your character will be sent to Skyway City to save Olivia Darque. There you can see the Blood Bay helicopter: For some reason, the model is not a Mil Mi-8, but a fearsome Mil Mi-24.
