Overview
Your archetype is arguably the most important choice you make while creating a hero or a villain. It determines which powers are—and aren't—available for you to use during the entire lifetime of your character. The decision of which archetype to play should be made based on what type of philosophy you wish to use for your character.
City of Heroes Archetypes
When you first make a character, you may select one of five available archetypes.
Blaster
Controller
Defender
Scrapper
Tanker
After one of your characters has reached level 50, two more archetypes called epic archetypes become available.
City of Villains Archetypes
When you first make a character, you may select one of five available archetypes.
Corruptor
Dominator
Mastermind
Brute
Stalker
There are currently no epic archetypes unlocked when a Villain reaches level 50. This restriction also includes City of Heroes - if you reach level 50 with a Villain, the Peacebringer and Warshade will not be unlocked in City of heroes if you have both games.
