Overview

A Global Character Slot Token is used to unlock a Character Slot on any server an account has access to. The character slot can be empty or occupied by a character.

Account Level Differences

Free Player

Free Players will receive two Global Character Slot Tokens to apply to any server except the VIP-only server, Exalted. Free players will be able to create a character in that slot on that server from one of the eight non-premium archetypes.

Premium Player

Premium Players will receive at least two Global Character Slot Tokens to apply to any server except the VIP-only server, Exalted. Premium Players can unlock up to 24 more character slots on each accessible server, for a total possible of 36 characters on 15 servers (540 total slots). Depending on Paragon Rewards Program level and licenses purchased on the Paragon Market, Premium Players can create any of the eight non-premium archetypes, plus any premium archetypes that have been unlocked.

VIP Player

VIP Players have 12 character slots unlocked for free on every server, including the VIP-only server, Exalted. A VIP Player can unlock up to 36 more slots on each server, for a total possible of 48 characters on 16 servers (768 total slots). VIP Players can create any of the fourteen archetypes, including the premium archetypes, regardless of Rewards level or licenses.

Slot Token Acquisition

The number of Global Character Slot Tokens a player may own is variable.

  • A player will receive one additional token for every cumulative 12 months of total paid subscription time
  • A player will reveive two additional tokens if they were subscribed during the release of Issue 12
  • A player will receive two additional tokens if they purchased Going Rogue before City of Heroes Freedom's release
  • A player will receive one additional token per character slot purchased, before or after Freedom's release

Examples

  1. Player A started playing the game with Going Rogue, loved it, and bought a 12 month subscription. He quickly bought 20 character slots on his home server to create alts then lost interest and stopped playing until after the launch of City of Heroes Freedom. He would have 2 (all F2P accounts get two) + 1 (1 year) + 20 (purchased slots) + 2 (Going Rogue) for a total of 25 Global Character Slot Tokens. As a Premium Player, he can allocate those 25 tokens on any server except Exalted.
  2. Player B has been subscribing off and on since Issue 3 and has paid for a total of 44 months but hasn't played for more than a year. He comes back to try out City of Heroes Freedom. He would have 2 (all F2P accounts get two) + 3 (3 years) for a total of 5 Global Character Slot Tokens. As he is a Premium Player, he can allocate those five tokens on any server except Exalted.
  3. Player C has been subscribing and buying expansions since the game's launch in 2004. He plays on two servers and bought open all 36 slots on both servers prior to Issue 21. At Issue 21's launch, he would have 7 (subscribing for 7 years) + 48 (purchased slots) + 2 (Issue 12) + 2 (Going Rogue) for a total of 59 Global Character Slot Tokens. As a VIP Player, he gets 12 slots for free per server, and can allocate his 59 global character slot tokens anywhere he wishes, up to 48 characters per server.
  4. Player D has been subscribing since launch but has never purchased an expansion. He has purchased 25 slots across various servers, but alongside the launch of Issue 21, he lost his job and has to unsubscribe. At Issue 21's launch, he would have 2 (all F2P accounts get two) + 7 (subscribing for 7 years) + 30 (purchased slots) + 2 (Issue 12) for a total of 41 Global Character Slot Tokens. As a Premium Player, he can allocate those 41 tokens on any server except Exalted, up to 36 characters per server.

Unlocking Characters

VIP status, licenses purchased through the Paragon Market, and a player's status within the Paragon Rewards Program will determine which previously created characters are available to unlock and and what new characters can be created.

VIPs can unlock and create any character. Premium Players can unlock and create any of the eight non-premium archetypes, and can unlock and create the premium archetypes if they have been granted via Paragon Rewards or purchased on the Paragon Market.

Examples

  1. Player A knows he wants to unlock his main, a mastermind and a few other favorite alts right away. Because he is only Reward Level 3, he must purchase the Mastermind Archetype License from the Paragon Market in order to play his main.
  2. Player B wants to unlock his main and two other characters he enjoyed playing. He's able to unlock his scrapper, controller, and mastermind right away because he's Reward Level 5 in the Paragon Rewards Program.
  3. Player C can play any of his characters because he is a subscriber.
  4. Player D is Reward Level 9, so can unlock his controller and mastermind characters with no issues. However, in order to unlock his Epic Archetypes, he must first purchase the Peacebringer Epic Archetype License, Warshade Epic Archetype License, Arachnos Soldier Epic Archetype License and Arachnos Widow Epic Archetype License.

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

Once used to open a slot, a Global Character Slot Token disappears and that slot is permanently attached to that server. When changing subscription state for the first time, all slot tokens are released and can be reallocated. Any subsequent subscription state change will fall back to the previously selected unlocks. If a player has been granted or purchased any slot tokens since the last time their subscription state changed, then they will be able to reallocate only those new slot tokens.

Examples

  1. Player X is a Premium Player. He has been granted or purchased 12 extra slot tokens beyond the standard 2 for Premium Players. He has 3 characters on Infinity and 10 characters on Union. He also has 1 unused character slot on Infinity. Player X decides to subscribe for a month; when he subscribes, his 12 Global Character Slot Tokens are released and he now has 12 character slots available on all servers. He can then allocate his 12 slot tokens wherever he pleases, even so far as to use all 12 of them on Exalted to get a total of 24 characters on the VIP server. At the end of the month, his VIP subscription drops and he goes back to his Premium Player status: 3 characters and 1 empty slot on Infinity and 10 characters on Union.
  2. Player Y is a VIP Player. He has been granted or purchased 10 extra slot tokens. He has 20 characters and 2 empty slots on Virtue, 10 characters on Defiant, 3 characters on Pinnacle, 2 characters on Exalted, and 1 character on Zukunft (he's brushing up on his German). Player Y cannot afford a subscription this month, so he drops to Premium and all of his extra slot tokens are released, adding to the 2 each Premium Player gets for a total of 12 character slots. He has to decide which of his 34 non-Exalted characters he wants to unlock, and if he wants to open up any empty character slots anywhere for new characters. In a couple months he scrapes together enough money to resubscribe; he goes back to 20 characters and 2 empty on Virtue, and all of his other characters are automatically unlocked as well since they are less than the 12 per server a VIP subscriber gets.
  3. Player Z is a Premium Player. He only has two characters and has never been granted or purchased any more character slot tokens. He subscribes so that he can see the Incarnate System, decides it's not to his liking, and unsubscribes; since he has never allocated any slot tokens anywhere, his slots never were released.
