Years ago, before Paragon City, even before the Roman Empire, there were gods and dieties on this earth that were as accessible as anyone else. Sometimes, those gods bore children with mortal people. Phaeton was one such man.

Born the son of a mortal woman and the Greek god Apollo, Phaeton always believed that he was a cut above the rest.  Knowing early on that his father lived on Mount Olympus gave him a sense of pride and, to a certain extent, arrogance that surpassed those around him. He made claims that one day, he too would rise to the level of godhood his father enjoyed, and that those around him were not as important as he.

On one particular day, Phaeton was attacked by several schoolmates who were tired of his claims. The leader of the group, Cyrrus, spat in his face and told him that he was a liar, that no god would ever father such a pathetic person.

Embittered, Phaeton decided to make the trek to see his father to find proof of his heritage.  After many months of travel, he came to a temple dedicated to his father, where he said a prayer and was greeted by Apollo himself.  Apollo, sensing his son's distress, offered him anything he wished for to prove that he was truly the Sun god's child. "Give me the Sun to drive across the sky for a single day," said Phaeton. Apollo was aghast, knowing the danger Phaeton was putting himself and the world. However, he relented, knowing the child would fail.

Phaeton, exactly as Apollo thought, was unable to drive the Sun's chariot properly, and caused great devastation across the world. If Phaeton drove the stallions too high, the world cracked and shifted with the freezing lands. If he drove too close, that ice would instantly explode in flames and everything burned as strongly as hell itself. On Mount Olympus, Zeus saw what was happening, and threw a thunderbolt at Phaeton, destroying the chariot and killing the youth. Apollo, knowing this would happen, offered him a chance at eventual redemption. Choosing to accept, Phaeton's spirit was plucked from Hades and was sent to study with Hephaestus, the god of metal work. After learning all there is to know of the power of fire and machinations, Phaeton's spirit was imbedded in a ring, formed from a single tear of Apollo. The ring was then sent into the world, and was a much desired object of wealth and power. Heroes would wear it as a sign of strength and wealth. Wearers would not hold on to the ring for long, however, as they would complain of seeing visions of a young man's ghost following them around when they wore it.

Eventually, the ring was sold to a young Greek man, who took it with him to America. He put it on once to show off to a girlfriend, and, seeing the ghost, immediately removed it. He couldn't bring himself to throw it away for fear of being cursed, so he simply hid it away amongst his various knick kncks. The man's grandson, Samuel, found the ring shortly after his grandfather died while going through his effects. Putting on the ring to try it on, he saw the ghost, but unlike the rings other possessors, he spoke to Phaeton and made a pact with him. Phaeton, who had learned all of the knowledge and skills of everyone who had ever worn the ring, agreed to help Samuel become a modern hero, and taught him the skills necessary to defeat evil. Working together, Samuel adopted Phaeton's name as a hero, in hopes of changing the world around him. The ghost Phaeton believes that, with enough time and effort, he can help Samuel to become a hero in his own right, and thus will earn the eternal rest he desires.

Phaeton: Paragon of Heroics

Phaeton, Fire/Devices Blaster

Background

Real Life History

Phaeton is a character created in May of 2004 as a part of the supergroup Sanctum. As a part of the SG's efforts at creating the perfect team, I developed a Fire Blast / Devices Blaster, which was specifically designed to be balanced by the rest of the team.

In September of 2004, the team disbanded, citing real life problems. I resigned my City of Heroes account, and went on to play other games. In November of 2005, I rejoined the game and found my character stored on the servers (Justice, where all my characters are), still at level 15. Since then, he has grown to his current level, and can be found either playing with his supergroup, The Tempest Legion, or with his friends at Justice Radio.

Ingame, I can be contacted at the Global Chat Handle "@Phaeton". If you are interested in teaming, please send a tell before sending the team request--I traditionally ignore blind invites.

I am reachable at jasonnellis@gmail.com.
