Description

Annoying Automaton

It's unclear why Nemesis chose to use this Jaeger automaton as a propaganda mouthpiece, rather than utilizing its combat potential. It's possible that Nemesis has begun to value psychological warfare as much as the conventional kind. Or, perhaps, this unit's weapon systems are malfunctioning, and he is simply making the best of a failed creation. However, the more that 'Heldenjaeger' (as this thing calls itself) speaks to you, the more you begin to suspect a more disturbing possibility: that this automaton decided to cheer on Nemesis publicly, in a show of loyalty to its master.

Too Low Level

This Jaeger automaton appears to be moving erratically, and its speakers are blaring a brassy marching song reminiscent of Ride of the Valkyries. It doesn't seem to be taking a threatening stance, or brandishing weapons of any sort.

When you approach, the music modulates slightly. Instead of echoing German, the choir in the song begins to sing in heavily-accented English instead:

Not level 40, not level 40, too weak for our Lord to even subdue. Nemesis rising, Nemesis rising, fighting powers much greater than you!

Antikythera Fragment

When you handed the rest of the Antikythera to Positron for study, you elected to hold onto this small fragment. It serves as a reminder of the events that news organizations have already dubbed...

Brass Tuesday

The invasion began shortly after you left James Harvan's lab. Nemesis automatons, empowered by the energy stolen from Pandora's Box, descended upon City Hall in a bid to control the heart of Paragon City.

You and Positron planned out Paragon's defenses and moved to intercept the invaders, with some success. However, as time dragged on, more and more of Nemesis's forces were appearing in the city. It was clear something needed to be done to take the fight to Nemesis himself.

You returned to Harvan's lab with the Antikythera, hoping to find some way of using its connection to Pandora's Box against Nemesis. You discovered a way to use the device in his lab to 'empower' the Antikythera, enabling it to absorb any Pandora energy that wasn't otherwise contained.

Your efforts were just in time, as Nemesis's full-scale invasion had begun. He sent his greatest creation, the Nemesis Monstrosity, to bring Paragon's defenses to its knees. You made use of the Antikythera's new capabilities, and with each automaton you defeated, you gathered more of the power from Pandora's Box.

With your newfound strength, you faced down the Monstrosity, and destroyed it. However, upon doing so, a massive surge of power was absorbed by the Antikythera. It proved too much, and the Antikythera shattered, allowing all of the energy it had absorbed to dissipate. The mainstay of the Nemesis army, however, had been broken, and Paragon City was safe once again.

Part One: Plots Within Plots

Briefing

This Jaeger automaton appears to be moving erratically, and its speakers are blaring a brassy marching song reminiscent of Ride of the Valkyries. It doesn't seem to be taking a threatening stance, or brandishing weapons of any sort. When you approach, the music cuts off abruptly, and a tinny voice begins to emit from the Jaeger's speakers.

Greetings, Character! Have you come to pay homage to our great Lord Nemesis? Thanks in no small part to your efforts, his might will soon span the entire globe!

Or... perhaps you have the hubris to oppose him? A laughable notion, indeed, but not atypical of so-called 'Heroes' like yourself!

  • Agree to form a task force.

Hmph! Typical! You think you can stand against Lord Nemesis himself? The hubris! The sheer arrogance!

Let me tell you something, Character. No one in this world or any other can match our great Lord Nemesis in power or intellect. You and your precious Paragon City are doomed! Nothing but the first step towards total global domination.

Watch helplessly as his armies descend upon City Hall, crushing your pathetic government and its heroes underfoot. Soon Paragon City shall recognize its new ruler, so you'd best either prepare to kneel or vacate the premises!

Warn Positron

Unnecessary Solicitation

Given up? Decided to lay down and let the inevitable come? Or, better yet - have you come to pledge your services to Lord Nemesis himself?

Mission Objective(s)

  • Warn Positron

Briefing

Character, it's good that you're here. I've been working with the local FBSA branch to coordinate and prepare Paragon's defenses for any imminent-

  • Nemesis is planning on attacking City Hall.

Positron looks surprised by your declaration.

That's certainly a likely target... but what are you basing this on? We've got Longbow's intelligence operatives working around the clock to monitor Nemesis activity, and we haven't come up with much yet.

  • A Jaeger told me about it.
Positron looks exceedingly puzzled as you relate to him your interaction with Heldenjaeger.
Most peculiar, Character. This is one of Nemesis's creations we're talking about. I'm not sure we can trust that it's telling the truth here.
  • Can we risk ignoring it?
That's...
Positron looks ready to argue the point, but thinks better of it.
No, you're right. I trust your judgement, Character. I'll assemble the Phalanx and we'll prepare to defend City Hall.
Let's head out immediately, unless... is there anything else?
  • No, let's head out.
Let's head to Atlas, then. I'll meet you there, Character.
  • On my way.
  • This is Nemesis we're talking about. What if City Hall is a diversion?
Positron scratches his chin thoughtfully.
You have a point, Character. I'll have Longbow run one more sweep...
Positron speaks into his communicator for a few minutes. When he finishes, he turns to you and smiles.
Good instincts, Character. Longbow detected suspicious activity in Skyway City. Apparently Nemesis was holding a strike force in reserve, hoping to catch us off-guard. I'll assign Citadel and Numina to organize a counterattack.
  • Alright, let's head out.
Let's head to Atlas, then. I'll meet you there, Character.
  • On my way.
  • Still, what if he's got more up his sleeve?
I doubt that Nemesis would have-
Positron stops himself mid-sentence.
Ah, there it is again. I need to stop underestimating my opponents. Let's see... so far he's been fairly conventional in his attack patterns. I feel like we might be missing something here.
  • Well... he's got automatons in the streets spreading propaganda.
Ah ha! Psychological warfare. I don't want to waste resources sweeping the streets for Jaegers and fake civilians, but he might be working on something larger in scope...
Positron fiddles with a device on his arm for a moment.
Ah! Bingo. I'm detecting a faint subsignal that's running alongside local radio stations. I'm betting Nemesis has agents inside one of Paragon's broadcasters... I'll send Synapse and Manticore to check it out.
  • Fantastic. I'm ready when you are.
Let's head to Atlas, then. I'll meet you there, Character.
  • On my way.
  • Do you think that's all that Nemesis has planned?
That's the best I've got, Character. At this point, I'd just be guessing at high-priority targets... wait, hold on.
I seem to recall Portal Corporation informing me of an alternate dimension they discovered in which Nemesis had succeeded in taking over the world in 1932. If Nemesis is aware of this dimension, and plans to open a portal there...
It's not worth the risk. I'm sending Penelope Yin and Back Alley Brawler to investigate. We can't let Nemesis get ahold of Portal Corp.
  • Sounds good. Let's go.
Let's head to Atlas, then. I'll meet you there, Character.
  • On my way.
  • Skyway, the media, Portal Corp... this just doesn't add up.
Positron looks exasperated by the situation.
I swear, trying to predict this insanity is like trying to play chess blindfolded.
I'll admit, City Hall and Skyway aren't the most strategic targets in Paragon. They're grandiose, though, and my understanding of Nemesis has always been that he prefers to put on a show. Still, that may be an underestimation. If I were intent on crippling the city, I'd be aiming at its power infrastructure. I'll go to Terra Volta and investigate personally.
That leaves you to handle City Hall yourself. Are you feeling up to it, Character?
  • I'll be fine, Positron.
Glad to hear it. You'd better head to Atlas soon, if an attack on City Hall is as imminent as you say.
  • On my way.
  • Hold on... we may be overthinking this.
Positron nods.
I'm beginning to feel the same way. We need to be ready for whatever Nemesis has planned, but if we start jumping at shadows we're going to spread Paragon's defenses too thin. Let's take a moment to clear our heads, and start over.
  • Agreed. (Contact box disappears to start from the beginning)
  • That's... not important now. Trust me on this.
That's...
Positron looks ready to argue the point, but thinks better of it.
No, you're right. I trust your judgement, Character. I'll assemble the Phalanx and we'll prepare to defend City Hall.
Let's head out immediately, unless... is there anything else?

This selection loops to another branch of this conversation which is already documented.

EdLetter.png Editor's Note:

Depending on how far you go through the briefing with Positron, you will receive one or more of the following clues. These will determine which members of the Freedom Phalanx join you in the "Save City Hall" phase of the mission.

Icon clue generic.png
Nemesis Plot: Skyway City
Positron discovered Nemesis forces in Skyway City, and sent Numina and Citadel to investigate.
Icon clue generic.png
Nemesis Plot: Broadcasting Subsignal
Positron detected a subsignal playing alongside local radio and television broadcasts. He sent Synapse and Manticore to investigate.
Icon clue generic.png
Nemesis Plot: Portal Corporation
You and Positron suspect that Nemesis may strike at Portal Corp in the near future. Positron sent Penelope Yin and Back Alley Brawler to ensure that the facility was secure.
Icon clue generic.png
Nemesis Plot: Terra Volta
You and Positron considered the ramifications of a Nemesis attack on the city's power grid. Positron decided it would be best if he investigated personally.

Heldenjaeger wasn't fooling you. This is definitely an all-out assault!

As the battle continues during this mission, captions and dialogue will vary depending on which allies have joined you. If you didn't choose to send anyone to cover other areas of the city during Positron's briefing, they will be called away during this mission at the appropriate phase.

EdLetter.png Editor's Note:

The number of Incarnate Warhulks that spawn in this phase will vary from one to three, depending on if you have any allies.

Debriefing

The Jaeger hops up and down at you, clearly agitated.

How... how DARE you? You measly, wriggling worm! You uncultured filth! You miserable, stinking wretch! To think that my Lord Nemesis's plans are in ruins... oh! It is too much for me to bear!

But do not think you have forestalled my master, Character, oh no! Far from it! His master plan extends far beyond your reach. You will see, soon enough!

Part Two: Powers That Be

Briefing

You realize why your efforts are futile, do you not? My Lord Nemesis has attained the power of the gods, thanks in no small part to you and your Antikythera. Every empowered automaton you destroy simply feeds that power back into his reserves!

So you see? You cannot win! My master wields the irresistible force of Pandora's Box, and you are powerless to stop him!

This outspoken automaton seems to have a point. More Incarnate Automatons are appearing on the streets every day. You'll need to find a way to cut off Nemesis from his power source... but how? Perhaps Positron has the knowledge necessary to assist you.

  • I've heard enough.

Ha! Too weak-willed to accept the truth, I see!

No matter! Nemesis's will shall be done, regardless of your petty schemes!

The Jaeger turns from you and begins to blare patriotic theme-music from its speakers.

Unnecessary Solicitation

Mission Objective(s)

  • Consult with Positron

Briefing

Character, I'm glad you're here. Paragon's defenses are still reeling from Nemesis's first wave, and pockets of Nemesis forces are popping up everywhere.

I'm thinking that we need to develop some kind of countermeasure. We can't continue to simply react to every attack Nemesis sends our way. If Paragon City is going to survive the week, we're going to need to find a way to strike back.

  • That's actually what I want to talk with you about.

It's good to see we're on the same page, here. What did you have in mind, Character?

  • Paragon City is going to need military support.
I've already been in contact with both Longbow and Vanguard, Character. Longbow has agreed to assist, and is lending aid and reinforcements to areas where are defenses are the weakest.
Unfortuantely, Vanguard claims that it's not clear that Nemesis - and I quote - 'currently represents a global threat'. They maintain that Nemesis is a federal criminal, not a power worthy of international concern. I fear that they may regret this stance, but I can do nothing to change it.
  • Somehow, we need to cut off Nemesis from the power of Pandora's Box.
This selection loops to another branch of this conversation which is already documented.
  • We need to take the fight to Nemesis himself.
This selection loops to another branch of this conversation which is already documented.
  • Somehow, we need to cut off Nemesis from the power of Pandora's Box.
Positron nods slowly.
This invasion would fall flat if Nemesis weren't able to wield that power. Most of the casualties we've suffered so far have been directly related to empowered automatons. What I don't see is what we can do in this position. We don't know what methods he's using to infuse his automatons with Pandora power, nor do we even know where it's being stored.
  • But we do know how it was acquired.
Positron frowns in thought.
True... Dr. Harvan claimed that the device in his lab amplified the properties of the Antikythera, correct? Do you believe that we could use this tech to our advantage?
  • It's worth a shot.
I suppose it is, Character. I'll continue to coordinate local defense forces here.
I would be cautious, Character. The Antikythera is a powerful artifact, and represents our best chance of beating Nemesis at this game... but much of its function is still a mystery to us. We have no idea what its capabilities - or its limits - might be.
  • Understood.
  • We need to take the fight to Nemesis himself.
I would be happy to, Character, but I simply don't know where he is. No one does, or has, for decades.
If I had a reliable method of tracking his movements, believe me, I would be using it.
  • Paragon City is going to need military support.

Mission Objective(s)

Laboratory Control Panel

Briefing

This appears to be the control panel that Dr. Harvan used to bridge a connection between the lab's device and the Antikythera.

Readouts for capacity, stability, and energy flow fill the screen.

  • Examine current energy capacity.
The capacity readout opens a submenu on the screen:
ENERGY CAPACITY - 98.03%
ENERGY STORAGE LEVEL - 1.97%
MINIMUM ENERGY NECESSARY FOR CONNECTION PROCEDURE - 1.95%
It looks like there's barely enough energy left in the device to establish a second connection to the Antikythera. If you're going to use this device, you're only going to get one shot.
  • Run a stability diagnostic.
The capacity readout opens a submenu on the screen:
FRAMEWORK STABILITY: 97.9% INTEGRITY
ENERGY CONTAINER STABILITY: 83.4% INTEGRITY
POWER SIPHON STABILITY: 48.8% INTEGRITY
WARNING: GENERAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTED. ENERGY INTAKE PROCEDURE NOT RECOMMENDED.
Harvan's initial use of this device appears to have caused significant damage to its components. You're not sure you'd be able to repeat the process - if the device tried to forcibly re-absorb the energy from Pandora's Box, either the energy container or the power siphon could fail, with potentially catastrophic results.
  • Manipulate the device's energy flow.
The energy flow readout enlarges on the screen, displaying in detail the distribution of energy through the device's conduits. It appears that all of the power processed by this device is funneled through a single channel.
It also marks a display for the device's energy intake, which is merely labeled EXTERNAL. You can only assume that this refers to the Antikythera itself.
  • Set all energy conduits to 'Reverse Flow'
The small green arrows on the display, indicating energy flow direction, flip and turn yellow. Text appears on the screen:
ENERGY FLOW MODIFIED
NEW CONTAINER - [EXTERNAL DEVICE]
At the bottom of the screen, a blinking red button appears containing a single query:
CONFIRM?
This procedure looks pretty involved. It's likely that any nearby Nemesis guards will take notice if you proceed.
  • Press CANCEL

This appears to be the control panel that Dr. Harvan used to bridge a connection between the lab's device and the Antikythera.

Readouts for capacity, stability, and energy flow fill the screen.

You're still not sure what, exactly, this device is capable of. However, it's clear that if there's any way to make the device destroy itself, you'd have to use this control panel to make it happen.

  • Examine current energy capacity.
The capacity readout opens a submenu on the screen:
ENERGY CAPACITY - 99.98%
ENERGY STORAGE LEVEL - 0.02%
MINIMUM ENERGY NECESSARY FOR CONNECTION PROCEDURE - 1.95%
It looks like the device's energy has been completely spent. It's doubtful you'll be able to successfully establish a connection with the Antikythera again, given the device's condition. Perhaps there's another way.
  • Run a stability diagnostic.
The capacity readout opens a submenu on the screen:
FRAMEWORK STABILITY: 97.9% INTEGRITY
ENERGY CONTAINER STABILITY: 83.4% INTEGRITY
POWER SIPHON STABILITY: 48.8% INTEGRITY

Debriefing

Too late! Too late! Time's UP!

Lord Nemesis has finished his ultimate creation! You're finished! You're through!

You'd best prepare yourself, Character! Prepare to face OBLIVION!

Part Three: History Repeating

Briefing

The Jaeger has stopped hopping around, and is now vibrating rapidly. If you didn't know better, you'd almost think this thing was... excited.

It's finally complete. My Lord Nemesis... what glory you have wrought! Oh joyous day...

Character! Now is the moment of truth. You will see what TRUE POWER looks like, in the hands of the greatest mind this world has ever known!

  • What are you talking about?

You will see, Character. You have stood against my master thus far, but when you see his latest creation, you will understand. This will be the place - where he was humiliated so many years ago. No one will deny his power now.

The Jaeger's voice modulates, becoming deeper. It seems to be trying to sound ominous.

No one.

It's too late, Character! Do not think to surrender now... now you must pay the price for defiance!

Mission Objective(s)

  • Repel the Nemesis Attack

Briefing

Rogers appears surprised by your sudden approach.

Character? Positron told me you were going to be out of commission for a bit, said you were working on a project that was gonna take the fight to Nemesis. You take him down yet?

  • Not quite, Rogers. Has there been any activity in Steel Canyon?

None so far. We've got officers in place to-

Rogers is cut off as you both hear a series of explosions in the distance. Almost immediately, Rogers's police radio erupts with frantic chatter.

Briefing

Glad to see you up and about, Character. You've been through quite a lot. How are you feeling?

  • I've been better. What did I miss?
As it turns out, that massive construct you defeated was housing the majority of the energy from Pandora's Box. The moment you defeated it, the Antikythera tried to absorb it.
Unfortunately, I do not believe the Antikythera was ever intended to house all of that power at once. It must have reached a breaking point, because shortly after the Nemesis Monstrosity was defeated, the Antikythera shattered. The explosion was... impressive.
  • That must have been when I blacked out.
Yes, that's likely. WJLA has been showing footage of the blast - someone managed to catch it on a cellphone camera near Platinum Lake.
Shortly thereafter, Nemesis's empowered automatons began to collapse. I believe that he built them as a sort of network - Jaegers and Warhulks all drawing power from the central unit.
With the Nemesis Monstrosity depowered, they lost most of their power. At that point, the PPD was able to sweep most of the Nemesis army out of the city, with some help from local Heroes.
  • So... what's our next step?
Positron pauses for a moment. When he speaks, his voice is grim.
We won, Character, but it was close. Lately, the Phalanx's response to threats has been... lacking. The ordeal with Pandora's Box has illustrated this fact quite clearly.
The time for mourning has passed - the loss of Statesman is no longer an excuse. It's time for the Freedom Phalanx to become a symbol of hope again.
Still, we will need allies. Your help in this matter - both in finding Pandora's Box and in stopping those who would abuse it - has been invaluable. I'm sure that the time will come when the Phalanx will need your help again.
Until then, Character, I wish you well. Keep up the fight. I've come to the conclusion that you just might be good at it.
  • You too, Positron.
  • I feel... weak. Empty.
Positron looks you over.
Hmm... I can't say that I'm surprised. For at least a moment, I'd estimate you became the most powerful being on the planet.
Returning to your normal state, by comparison, must feel like an extreme loss of potency. It should pass fairly quickly. Give yourself some time to adjust.
  • What happened, exactly?
As it turns out...

  • There's no time for that. What about Nemesis? The invasion?
Positron raises his hands in front of him, in a calming gesture.
Whoa there, easy. Fight's over, Character. We won.
The Phalanx is already working with disaster relief teams. Blyde Square looked bad, but we'll have it cleaned up in no time. Paragon City is fairly resilient, when it needs to be.
  • So... Nemesis called off his forces?
As it turns out...

Confront Mender Silos

Unnecessary Solicitation

The Jaeger appears to be short-circuiting. An audio loop playing from its speakers:

Hail Lord Nemesis! Hail Lord Nemesis! Haillll Looooorrrrddd Neeemmmmeeessss...

The audio begins to skew, then shuts off entirely. The Jaeger stumbles slightly, then tips over and lands on its side, exposing its underbelly. On it's underside casing, you can see a small engraving in the metal:

Jaeger Mk XXVI
Serial #: 11-07-2932
Unit Designation: Heldenjaeger

Mission Objective(s)

  • Confront Mender Silos

Briefing

Mender Silos looks apprehensive, yet relieved. He favors you with a faint smile as you approach, which seems exceedingly odd on the generally stoic Silos.

Greetings, Character. I feel that I must commend you. The power housed within Pandora's Box represented a significant portion of humanity's latent power.

Handling such power is often treacherous, but you have managed to prevent any... significant catastrophes from occurring. That implies, to me, a remarkable strength of character.

Now, you have come to me with questions? I believe I may be able to answer some of them, at least in part.

  • If you knew all this would happen, why did you hide it from me?
Mender Silos looks away from you for a moment. His face remains impassive... but you can sense some degree of shame in him, as well.
It was necessary, Character. I'm not proud of this moment in history... but I do see how crucial it is. Believe me, I have tried to find ways to avoid just this scenario... but every attempt has ultimately led to disaster.
Power has a tendency to accumulate, Character. It's not direct, but it has a sort of... gravity all its own. Those with power become addicted to it, and they have the strength to claim more. The weak eventually wither - either crushed underfoot by their superiors, or coddled and protected by them.
Consolidation. This is the problem we face. When a single entity gains the power to dominate all others - that is what you would call a 'Champion', to give the concept a name. But a Champion is not enough. The Coming Storm fast approaches, and all of Earth's forces must be brought to bear if it is to survive.
  • So you purposely prevented me from finding the Box?
Quite the opposite. I've tried to change this point in history, many times... but every time I have meddled here, disaster has followed.
I've seen timelines in which some hero of Paragon acquires the power from Pandora's Box, yes. I've also seen Nemesis slowly spreading his madness across the globe, declaring himself its emperor. In most instances, it has been you, Character, that has inherited the Box's legacy.
But... it did not matter. Each instance was the same. The power would tip the scales irrevocably to one side, forever skewing the world's progress. And when the Storm finally arrived...
Mender Silos trails off, shaking his head sadly.
No. This is how it had to be. I'm sorry, Character. I could find no other way.
  • What happened to the energy contained in Pandora's Box?
It has dissipated, Character. The power still exists, yes - in one form or another. But it has spent too long disconnected from a host, and has lost all form. In time, it will manifest in other ways, but never again to the same degree.
Mender Silos is staring directly at you as he tells you this. You get the feeling that he's trying to gauge whether or not you believe him - or, perhaps, he is daring you to challenge his statement. It is difficult to tell.
  • Do you know where Nemesis is now?
Mender Silos's eyes harden.
Where is he? I fear that is not something I can help you with, Character.
I do know, however, that you have hurt him. You injured the one part of him still capable of feeling pain: his pride. He skulks in the shadows, plotting a thousand intricate revenges - on you, on Paragon City, on the world.
He continues to believe, stubbornly, that he is a man apart from the world he lives in. And I fear that it will be a long, long time before he begins to realize his error in this belief.
But for now, rest easy, Character. You have earned it... and, I fear, you will need it for the trials to come.
  • Actually, no. I don't need your answers.
Very well, Character.
You may not realize it, but today has been a good day for the future of Earth. Your efforts are the primary cause of this, and for that, I feel I must congratulate you.
Mender Silos inclines his head slightly.
Well done, Character. Well done.
