Biography
Background
Marcus Cole is one of the first two modern day super powered beings and the first modern Hero while his friend, Stefan Richter, the other of the two, became the first modern villain. Cole was born into poverty in Paragon City, his mother dieing in labor, in 1896 and did his patriotic duty in 1918 when he enlisted to serve in World War I, however an accident occured and led to him, and several friends to search out the Well of Furies, forever transforming the world and himself.
He returned to Paragon City in 1931 with the power of Zeus and by the next year he had taken up the figt against the criminal elements of his home under the name Statesman inspiring several others to do the same. Cole gathered these others and formed the Freedom Phalanx. This team was put to the test days later during Brass Monday, an attack by Nemesis, which led to more heroes emerging and the Citizen Crime Fighting Act being passed.
His leadership has been relied heavily since and never more so during the Rikti War. Cole led the Alpha team of Vanguard as one of the "Elite Five" distracting the Rikti and enabling Omega team to shut down the Rikti portals, end the war, but not without grave loses. In the aftermath, only 8 widely recognized heroes remained, all 8 being called the Surviving Eight, and all of them being the Freedom Phalanx. Cole, from his position as the leader of the Freedom Phalanx and within Vangaurd, has continued to be consider a leader among the hero community and is looked at for guidance and as the voice of the average super-man.
