Initial Contact
Ah, fresh meat, I mean, hello there! I am the Fireball of the Arcane Council, and I have the dubious honor of finding individuals who are willing to help out with tasks that are beyond the capabilities of the Arcane Council to deal with themselves.
I think you fit the bill.
Greeting
- Welcome back, Character
- Ah, the prodigal son / daughter returns.

The Spellwhisperer
Mission Briefing
(Fireball blazes in your presence)
Hey, buddy, you think you can help us out? Us Animus Arcana are spells that can think and talk, you know. We are, as you put it, intelligent. But there is a stage before we can communicate, and the thaumaturgists call it 'sentient.' We Intelligent spells look out for promising Sentient ones to help along and ensure they become Intelligent like us. In a warehouse full of Drudges, we have word of four spells being kept as pets. We'd love it if you could go in there and collect them and bring them back to us.
- Collect Sentient Spells
(Fireball blazes in glee)
Great! Fantastic! You should know that these Sentient spells really are no smarter than animals, almost pet-like in their actions, so make sure you don't spook them and let them get accustomed to you before you do anything radical.
Unnecessary Solicitation
(Fireball burns angrily)
Hey buddy, I thought you were going to get those spells? What happened?
Mission Objective(s)
Fireball said the Drudges were keeping them around as pets. They should be easy to locate.
- Collect Sentient spells
- 4 Collect Sentient spells
You've collected all the sentient spells, return them to the Arcane Council for education.
Enemies
Cindy | |
You have collected Cindy, a sentient spell in the form of a fireball. She seems friendly and playful, and risks setting you on fire from time to time. |
Snowball | |
You have collected Snowball, a sentient spell in the form of a cloud of ice. He seems a bit withdrawn, but happy to have you around. |
Sparky | |
You have collected Sparky, a sentient spell in the form of a lightning bolt. He seems super-excitable and prone to 'accidents'. |
Lumie | |
You have collected Lumie, a sentient spell in the form of a ball of light. She shines brightly when excited and seems to be very curious when you are not paying attention. |
Debriefing
(Fireball burns happily)
Great, what did you get? A fireball, nice! Ice Cloud, a Lightning Bolt, and a Light spell! Fantastic work. We'll get to educating these Sentient spells right away, thanks again!
Your continued work for the Council is noted, Character.
Gate Crasher
Mission Briefing
Did I ever tell you what a Fracture is? It exists outside the normal life cycle of an Animus, and only the most powerful of spells can attain it. Destroying a Fracture is one of the more difficult things you can do, because Fractures don't come back as Zygotes, they are just... gone. Whispers have it that their magical energy is absorbed by nearby spells not reborn as Zygotes. That makes sense, I guess. Anyway, there is a Fracture calling himself Boss Name that is going around acting like he's all that and a bag of chips. He's getting a few Intelligent spells to back him up as well, hoping that they too can become Fractures and be all-powerful. We need you to go in and take Boss Name out for good. Fractures are dangerous and too many of them can cause a magical imbalance that the Animus can't recover from.
- Destroy Boss Name
Great to hear it. Boss Name is attracting more Animus to his cause every day, so the sooner you deal with him the better.
Unnecessary Solicitation
Still need Boss Name dealt with. What are you standing here for?
Mission Objective(s)
Seems that Boss Name has used stolen Carnival of Light wards in protecting his lair.
- Take out Boss Name
- Defeat Boss Name
Boss Name has been destroyed. Animus in Night Ward have become ever so slightly more powerful as a result.
Enemies
Editor's Note: The Animus Arcana boss' name can vary. Possible names include:

Debriefing
I felt it when you destroyed Boss Name. We all did, although with the amount of Animus here in Night Ward meant that our increase in power was barely even perceptible, but in the end, we know you got him.
Twignapping
Mission Briefing
Oh man oh man! Those low down Black Knights. I knew we couldn't trust them! One of our Embodiments, spells that live inside magic objects has been taken by them. I need you to get him back!
- I can rescue the Embodiment for you.
Great, his name is Barkley Twigworth. Don't ask. He's an animated staff, and I bet that lowdown Sir Morgin is behind this.
Unnecessary Solicitation
Please rescue Barkley.
Mission Objective(s)
This is the office that Barkley is supposedly being held in.
- Rescue the Embodiment
- Rescue Barkley Twigworth
Barkley Twigworth has been rescued!

Counter-counter Spell
Mission Briefing
Worst case scenario, Character. You know that we on the Arcane Council are all part of the Animus Arcana, the living spells here in Night Ward and other planes. Spells that have sentience, even intelligence. Well, all spells can attain this status and do, eventually. One spell in particular is very bad for the rest of us when this happens. That is Dispel Magic.
Dispel Magic is an aberration. He destroys, literally, any magic he touches. He's also kind of an ass, and thinks he's better than the rest of us because of this. We have only one choice left for our own well-being, take him out.
- I can deal with Dispel Magic for you.
Oh, I bet you can. You can't do it alone though. Taking him out with your normal powers will just cause him to come back, maybe even come back as a crazy powerful Fracture which would be like a 17 on the Very Bad scale. You're gonna need some help. You should talk Counter Spell into going with you. Combined I bet you can take him out for good, Final Death him and bump him back down to a Zygote.
See Counter Spell
Unnecessary Solicitation
You need to talk to Counter Spell to figure out how to take out Dispel Magic.
Briefing
What do YOU want?
(If NOT Magic Origin)
- I need your help in taking down Dispel Magic.
Oh I see. This whole council shuns me, avoids me because of what I am, what I do. I counter spells. Now they think they can just call on me when they need me?
- Yes, they need you. I need you. You are scary because of what you do. You can't blame them.
- I guess you are right, but I need you to prove that you have what it takes to fight by my side. I need you to go out and take down 7 rogue Animus Arcana. Show you can take out spells and I will help you take out Dispel Magic.
- I will do this task for you, then return.
- Stuff it. You need to help and you know it.
- +++ Missing Information +++
- You want the Arcane Council to respect you? Do this for them.

(If Magic Origin)
- I need to take down Dispel magic, but I can't do it alone.
You can't do it alone, now can you. He'd shut down every spell and magic dingus you have at your disposal. Nothing would work. But, they don't call me Counter Spell for nothing. I know the counter to everything. I can help you, but first you need to help me.
- What task do you require, oh mighty Counter Spell?
- +++ Missing Information +++
- Since I need your help with Dispel Magic, I will do your task. What is it?
- Prove your worth by destroying 7 rogue Animus Arcana here in Night Ward. Taking them out will show me I am not playing with a lightweight and that together we can get the job done.
- I will do this task for you, then return.
- Then we can work together? Great. What is it that you need done?

Unnecessary Solicitation
Have you got Counter Spell to agree to help you yet?
Briefing
Ok, you are as powerful as everyone says you are. Now, in order for me to help you I am going to need help from another Animus: Rejuvenate. Get him to make sure I come through this and we have a solid deal.
- Leave.
Go see Rejuvenate
Unnecessary Solicitation
You should talk to Rejuvenate.
Briefing
Again with the healing. Sometimes I feel like no one respects me until they need me. It's a trait I share with Counter Spell. Since this is for him, I think I will do it if you do me a favor first. The Drudges are the bane of a spell-like-me's existence. Take out 7 of them and you have my loyalty and my help with Counter Spell and you taking on Dispel Magic.
- Leave

Briefing
Great job back there. Wasn't sure we were gonna pull it off, but I am happy now that we did. Dispel Magic is a very bad spell to gain Intelligence. We need to make sure we stop them earlier next time.
Debriefing
Fantastic news. We can all relax now that Dispel Magic is a Zygote again. I wouldn't worry about his threats, Zygotes don't remember any part of their previous life. You should be fine.
Hermit Spells
Mission Briefing
Ah great, you're willing to do more for us. You know those Animus Arcana that are like floating magic items? Those are called Embodiments, they are Intelligent spells that have found permanent homes within items of power. We on the Arcane Council generally oversee the transitions into Embodiments, but we require specific, unenchanted, items for the transition.
- I am willing to help with their transformation.
I was hoping you'd say that. See, the Talons of Vengeance stole three groups of items we were keeping around. I need you to go into their caves and get those items back. We need the staves, crystal balls, and tomes they stole in order to complete the ritual.
Unnecessary Solicitation
The Arcane Council still is in need of those items that the Talons stole!
Mission Objective(s)
This is the place that Fireball directed you to. Those unenchanted items are in here somewhere.
- Locate the items needed
- 2 staves to collect
- 3 books to collect
- 2 crystal balls to collect
You have found the unenchanted items needed. Fireball will be pleased.

Debriefing
Great job, Character. We can begin the process of moving the spells into these items immediately.
True Colors
Mission Briefing
You know, I am not sure you know how new Animus Arcana get made. You see, we all started off as Zygotes, extremely simple magic motes with no real distinctiveness of our own. Zygotes come from either a great work of magic, or when a spell suffers what is known as the Final Death. That means that they kind of 'reset' back into being a zygote after they are used to fuel a spell. Cee Baller noticed something the other day, a weird Zygote appeared that doesn't act like a normal Zygote. Can you do us a favor and track down this Zygote and get to the bottom of this?
- Track down the mysterious Zygote
Thanks, we on the Arcane Council are curious if this Zygote is the result of the final death of a spell we knew or if he's a mutant spell, or perhaps a new breed of Zygote altogether. Hopefully you can come back with some answers.
Unnecessary Solicitation
You need to find this weird zygote.
Mission Objective(s)
The Black Knights have claimed this territory as their own, finding the Zygote will not be easy.
- Find weird zygote
- Find the zygote
- Talk to the weird zygote
You've found the Zygote
Enemies
Notable NPCs
- Sir Sedrick (Black Knights boss)
- Weird Zygote (Animus Arcana Fireball)
Briefing
The Zygote shimmers before you.
- Touch the Zygote.
- You touch the Zygote. It feels... magical, but there is nothing special about it.
- Examine the Zygote.
- You examine the Zygote. You can see within its core what looks like a spark of electricity.
- Talk to the Zygote.
- 'Hello? I know you are just a Zygote and probably can't understand me. If you can, pulse once for yes and twice for no.'
- The Zygote pulses once.
- Were you once a powerful Animus? An Embodiment or Living Magic?
- The Zygote pulses twice.
- Were you once an Intelligent spell?
- The Zygote pulses once.
- Were you a Fireball?
- The Zygote pulses twice.
- Were you an Ice Cloud?
- The Zygote pulses twice.
- Were you a Lightning Bolt?
- The Zygote pulses once.
- Were you on the Arcane Council at one point?
- The Zygote pulses once.
- Thank you, I will see that the current council knows of your condition.
- Were you a Light Spell?
- The Zygote pulses twice.
The Mysterious Zygote | |
Turns out the Zygote has some spark of intellect after all. It seems that it used to be a Lightning Bolt spell that was very powerful, and part of the Arcane Council at one point. The Arcane Council will be anxious to hear this information. |
Debriefing
Wow, an ex-Council member? A lightning bolt you say? Must have been Brizmax. He was a crazy powerful spell. No one ever thought he'd see the final death! I guess his Zygote would be as unique as that. He'll be up to an Intelligent spell in no time, I can guarentee that.
Whoa!
Mission Briefing
Ok, something weird happened earlier. All the Zygotes turned to Coalesced spells nearly instantly. Someone, somewhere, cast a huge spell. An epic spell. An apocaLYPTIC spell. Took all of the Zygotes from Night Ward, and when they were back they were all Coalesced spells, they all gained power during a single spell cast. We need to find out what's going on and if it is going to happen again.
- I will pursue this.
Talk to Cee Baller. He usually can divine these sorts of things.
Talk to Cee Baller
Unnecessary Solicitation
You need to talk to Cee Baller.
Briefing
Oh, Contact, I was expecting you.
- What happened to the Zygotes?
- I saw all the Zygotes in Night Ward taken away and return nearly instantly, but they were no longer Zygotes. They were Coalesced spells. A Coalesced spell is what a Zygote becomes after it has been used in enough magic.
- So EVERY Zygote in First Ward was used to fuel a single spell that was so powerful it promoted all...
- Yes, that is what is looks like.
- What kind of spell could do this?
- We know that the spell couldn't have been cast on this plane of existance. A spell that powerful would be noticed by everyone. I can discern what plane of existance it occurred on, if you wish to take a portal to that plane we can learn exactly what happened, and if it can happen again.
- Do you know what spell was cast that did this?

Cee Baller's Story | |
Cee Baller told you that someone in another dimension cast a spell so powerful it consumed every Zygote in Night Ward and turned them all into Coalesced spells. He figured out what plane it occurred on and would like you to investigate and see if it can happen again. |
Locate the disturbance
Unnecessary Solicitation
Cee Baller gave you the info.
Mission Objective(s)
This entire area looks decimated. Could whatever have done this been the spell that promoted all the Zygotes?
- Locate the disturbance
- Talk to the Last Man on Earth
- Defeat the Last Man on Earth
With the final defeat of the Last Man on (this) Earth, you have the answer to the question posed to you by Cee Baller.
Briefing
Who... are you? No one could have survived!
- My name is Character, who are you?
- Call me... um, Elmo. How did you survive? I killed everyone!
- You didn't kill me. Now tell me what happened here.
- I had enough. No one believed I had the power to do what I threatened. No one would give into my demands, so I showed them. I cast a spell to destroy the world, just like I threatened I would.
- You destroyed the entire world?! (See Below)
- I am from another dimension. We know something happened here, I was sent to investigate.

I see, thanks for the report. Some crazy wizard nuked his whole world? We called that a 'tiltowait' back in the day, but haven't seen anyone do it on that scale before. Glad you took the L.M.O.E. out.
Oh I get it now, he called himself 'Elmo'. He knew what he was doing. Crazy!
