Freakshow Meat Doctor

Doc Buzzsaw makes no secret that she was once a disciple of Dr. Vahzilok, but had a falling out with her mentor some time ago. After wards she journeyed to the Rogue Isles to continue her research, and rumor has it, escape the retribution of the Vahzilok. The Freakshow came to her looking for someone who understood both cybernetic machinery and human anatomy well enough to repair them, and she quickly formed an association with them. The Freaks love the improvements 'Doc' makes for them, and Buzzsaw sees her energetic new allies as the perfect mix of protectors and test subjects. The fact that both sides are completely deranged only makes the partnership work better.

Initial Contact
I've heard so much about you. Please, call me Doctor Buzzsaw, or just 'Doc' if you prefer. My exuberant young friends within the Freakshow bequeathed the name to me following a small incident with my former fellows among the disciples of Dr. Vahzilok. Those times are behind me now, and so I chose to keep the colorful moniker to designate the start of my new life here, helping my allies. I hope that I will be able to count you amongst my associates as I continue my work.

So without further ado, let us begin.

Story Arc
Die by the Freak!

The first thing Doc Buzzsaw asked of you was innocuous, if a bit grizzly. Doc needed some cybernetic parts from old patients who were no longer using them, and sent you to get them for her. After you delivered the pieces, she seemed very interested in one piece in particular. An artificial heart that was now drawing power from a shard of red crystal embedded in it.

Doc needed a large shard of Coral Crystal in order to continue her work, and was willing to pay to get it. She asked you to find a leader among the Slag Golems the Freakshow had dubbed 'Big Rocky,' and take the red coral crystal shard at its heart. She also needed you to get some spare parts off of fallen Freaks. The Freaks on the scene didn't seem to mind, and even helped you on Buzzsaw's word.

Store
Doc Buzzsaw sells the following items:

* Inspirations
* Level 25 Technology/Science Dual-Origin Enhancements
* Level 25 Technology Single-Origin Enhancements
* Level 30 Technology Single-Origin Enhancements

Recover five items for Buzzsaw
Briefing

I do a great deal of work, and not just for my friends within the Freakshow. Miners, workers, even members of groups such as the Sky Raiders and Arachnos; I give the aid of my skills to all. Unfortunately, often the desperate men who hire my services cannot afford to pay when the bill comes due. So sometimes I must recover my work from its current owners. Many of them are, understandably I think, reluctant to return the very valuable merchandise they now have, and so I like to employ the occasional freelancer to do this sort of work for me. All you will need to do is recover everything on my list from the current owners.

There are five items I need returned. Defeat the current owners to recover them, or, in two separate and sad cases, recover the itmes from their perished bodies. The first item is a pair of cybernetic eyes I implanted in a Lt. Rafferty of the Council.

I've tried to have my friends among the Freakshow do this sort of thing for me in the past, but in all their exuberance a simple collection all too often ends up as a firefight and then things get damaged. They are quite entertaining, but a bit too rambunctious.

Clue: A Grisly List

This is a list of all the items Doc Buzzsaw wants you to recover from her previous clients. The list describes what each item is, and where it can be found.

Clue: A light collection sack

This sack contains the first item on Doc Buzzsaw's list:

Two cybernetic eyes with infra-red and low-light filters.

Mission Objective(s)

This sack contains a couple of the items on Doc Buzzsaw's list:

Two cybernetic eyes with infra-red and low-light filters,
And a robotic spinal column, braced for heavy lifting.

Mission Objective(s)
A robotic spinal column, braced for heavy lifting.
And a cybernetic arm with heavy hydraulics.

Mission Objective(s)

* Recover fourth item for Buzzsaw
* Get legs from Shaderix

Clue: A bulging collection sack

This sack contains many of the items on Doc Buzzsaw's list:

Two cybernetic eyes with infra-red and low-light filters,
A robotic spinal column, braced for heavy lifting,
A cybernetic arm with heavy hydraulics,
And a shapely pair of cybernetic legs, modified for stealth and combat.

Mission Objective(s)

* Recover last item for Buzzsaw
* Get heart from Reliquary

Clue: A bulging collection sack

This sack contains many of the items on Doc Buzzsaw's list:

Two cybernetic eyes with infra-red and low-light filters,
A robotic spinal column, braced for heavy lifting,
A cybernetic arm with heavy hydraulics,
A shapely pair of cybernetic legs, modified for stealth and combat,
And an artificial heart with a red coral fragment embedded in it. Though the heart has no power, its motors hum and its valves contract.

Debriefing

YOu return at last, my collector. Excellent! Let me see what you've recovered.

I was wondering where these had gotten to. Ah, this one should be quite useful. A bit of cleaning, and this will be ready for re-sale and re-use. Now I see where the design flaw was on this. I'll have to repair and improve that. So much to do.

Now what's this? A shard of red crystal, impaled through this artificial heart. Yet it still works, even after its power supply has long gone dead. If you'll excuse me, I'll have to take some time to examine this. Speak to me again shortly, I may have some more work based on this.

Absolutely fascinating...

Get cybernetic parts and a large coral crystal for Doc Buzzsaw's project
Briefing

I tell you, I have discovered something astonishing! It seems that many of the items you recovered had microscopic fragments of red coral crystals embedded within them. No doubt, from exposure to red coral crystal found within the mines, or from battling with the unnatural 'Slag Golems' that infest certain parts of the island. Well, what I discovered was that the crystals were amplifying the power of those parts. Isn't it fantastic? It put me in mind of a new project, but in order to complete it, I will need both more cybernetic parts and a very large fragment of red coral crystal. Fortunately, I know where both can be obtained.

Very good! With your assistance, my SuperFreak will be ready in no time at all! Now, to business:

The Slag Golems are massing to attack the HellForge, led by one of their number whom my energetic Freakshow friends have termed 'Big Rocky.' I strongly suspect that this 'Big Rocky' may contain a massive fragment of red coral in order to hold such a great sway over others of its kind. I want you to retrieve this crystal for me. Also, it is likely that several Freakshow have fallen in the fighting. If you run across any, please use this list to gather the components I'm going to need. They won't miss them any longer, and each piece you find will get a second chance at life in my next project: The crystal powered SuperFreak!

Oh, excuse me. I got a bit excited there. Most uncharacteristic. My apologies. I will warn the Freaks there that you will be on scene, and request that they consider you a friend during the battle. That should help to lower the degree of interruption.

Clue: A list of Freak components

This is a list from Doc Buzzsaw of specific components she needs to complete her 'SuperFreak.' Most of these parts can be found on fallen members of the Freakshow.

Mission Objective(s)

* Recover Parts for Doc Buzzsaw
* 5 Freak parts to collect
* Defeat 'Big Rocky'

Clue: Collection Sack

This sack contains components Doc Buzzsaw will need to complete her 'SuperFreak.'

Clue: Big Rocky's crystal heart

This large red crystal used to be the central core of the Slag Golem called 'Big Rocky.' Doc Buzzsaw wants to use it to power her 'SuperFreak.'

Debriefing

Excellent! I've been quite busy working on my latest creation while you were out. With all that you've gathered, I should be able to complete my 'SuperFreak' post-haste. If you'll excuse me, I must finish my creation while the genius of inspiration is still upon me.

Destroy the SuperFreak
Briefing

Ah. Well. You see, there's been a minor set-back. My test subject, my first SuperFreak, has cruelly betrayed my work and my trust. He has gone renegade, and even now, he gathers together the Slag Golems to destroy me! I fear that he's no longer himself. Perhaps the Coral shard itself has taken control? Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaught of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong? Regardless, the necessary solution is clear: My SuperFreak must be destroyed!

It will be difficult to destroy my creation. I don't mean emotionally, I mean it will be physically quite challenging. I'd suggest gathering some cronies to assist you.

I thank you for your assistance, and assure you that you will be compensated. Fortunately, I emplaced a tracking device within my creation's chasses, and so I know his approximate location. You must destroy my SuperFreak, and put an end to this madness.

By the way, if you are planning on charging into this without a small to medium sized group of rogues, I was wondering if you'd thought of what you'd like to have happen to your internal organs once the SuperFreak has ripped them out? I don't want to be rude, but I could make sure that whatever remains of your body finds one or more new uses through my experiments. Well, think about it, won't you?

Mission Objective(s)

* Destroy the SuperFreak

Debriefing

He who lives by the cybernetic monstrosity powered by living coral, all too often dies by teh cybernetic monstrosity powered by living coral. Fortunately, you have helped me to avoid this fate. I think I shall shelve my plans for the SuperFreak for a time, and instead concentrate on another project. Perhaps mass-producing an army of Tank Freaks? Yes, that would likely be much safer, and far more useful.

Help Doc Buzzsaw get what she needs to start building Tank Freaks
Briefing

Ah, a pleasure to see you, as always. In point of fact, it's most opportune timing. I've decided to put all of the unpleasantness with the SuperFreak behind me and concentrate my efforts on something much more practical: I've decided to start producing Tank Freaks of my own. You see, most of the Tank Freaks here in the islands came over from Paragon City, and this puts my exuberant young friends in the Freakshow at rather a disadvantage. By building Tank Freaks here, I can correct this imbalance. However, I will need the assistance of a dependable individual to help me get what I'll need in order to begin.

Excellent! I knew I could rely on you for able assistance! Well, to begin, the first thing I will need is more medical supplies. Fortunately, I've located a supplier. Unfortunately, the supplier will likely not be willing to part with the supplies I need. To further compund the poor fortune, the current owner of the supplies is the Family. I'll leave up to your talents as to how best to procure what I need.

Clue: Medical Suppply List

This long list of medical supplies has everything that Doc Buzzsaw needs for major surgeries.

Mission Objective(s)

* Steal medical supplies
* 4 medical supplies to steal

Clue: Stolen Supplies

All of these stolen medicines should be just what Doc Buzzsaw needs for her work.

Debriefing

With all of these supplies, I am almost ready to begin. Now all I need is a great deal of robotic parts, some control circuitry, and several energetic and power-mad young fools willing to throw their bodies away to become my armor-plated cybernetic experiments. The latter is surprisingly easy, but the former may present another opportunity for gainful work for you.

Steal robotic tech for Doc Buzzsaw
Briefing

I've secured some volunteers, now all I need is a few critical parts. Fortunately, the Council is shipping in some new robotic supplies that match nicely. I need them, and would like you to procure them for me. I suppose I should use stolen Crey technology components for the classic Tank Freak, but one must make do with local 'ingredients', as it were.

The Council's shipment is just about to come into port. Now, I don't need everything, just a few key components that I haven't been able to fabricate myself. Get them for me, and I'll reward you well, as always.

Clue: A list of robotic components

This is a short but very detailed list of the robotic components Doc Buzzsaw needs in order to build Tank Freaks.

Mission Objective(s)

* Steal parts for Doc Buzzsaw
* 4 parts to take

Clue: Tank Parts

Doc Buzzsaw will need all of these robotic components in order to build her own Tank Freaks.

Debriefing

With these final components, my Tank Freaks will soon be ready! Now all I have to do is prepare them, install these remaining parts, and hope that the Council doesn't show up to destroy them before they're at full power. As if such an unlikely event could possibly come to pass!

Recover the three Tank Freaks
Briefing

Well, you see, there has been a minor setback. The Council and the Family seem to have realized that I was at the root of their mutual losses, and have taken over my lab before my new Tank Freaks were complete. Now those ruffians will destroy my beautiful creations! I will pay you handsomely to recover all three of the Tank Freaks I've already built. If you recover all three, I'll make certain to provide you a tidy bonus. But if even one is destroyed, well, it shall be reflected appropriately in your pay.

Remember, you must recover all three of them! If you lose even one, my presentation to my fellow meat doctors will be ruined, and your pay will be reduced. I hate to be so harsh, but you must succeed at this task.

Clue: Tanker Booster

This odd-looking device can 'jumpstart' Doc Buzzsaw's prototype Tank Freaks. Once active they should be able to help you, but Doc Buzzsaw will be upset if they're damaged.

Mission Objective(s)

* Rescue all three Tank Freaks
* Three Freaks to recover

NPC Text

The text of the Tank Freaks during this mission is particularly amusing. The following is heard during the mission:

:Prototype Tank Freak 1, upon being rescued
:Ah, that hits the spot. Hey, wanna crack some heads?
:Don't suppose you could give me a jump start or something?

But alas, this must be my final payment to you. I'm afraid that I will soon be so busy with building more Tank Freaks out of my exuberant young allies that I won't have the time for the sort of field work you've helped me with so much. Let us part on this happy note, then. I wish you will in your future endeavors, and hope you find the destiny you seek.

Henri Dumont is one of the top dogs for the Cage Consortium. It's his job to make sure the Sharkhead Isle operations run as smoothly as possible. He realizes that sometimes sacrifices must be made for profitability, and so is willing to sacrifice anything - or anyone - that gets in his way. He sometimes hires freelancers to deal with matters of special importance to the Cage Consortium.
Souvenir: Depleted Magical Isotope

This is a depleted magical isotope you collected from a tale you like to call:

Disturbing the Dead

It all started when Henri Dumont revealed the Cage Consortium discovered a vein of bauxite under Potter's Field. The problem was that Potter's Field was a cemetary where the local workers buried their dead, and starting to mine there would be a PR nightmare unless handled properly. Henri came up with a plan to set off a magical bomb that would expose the bauxite vein while pointing a finger towards the Circle of Thorns as the responsible party. You were sent to discuss the plan with Archmage Tarixus, who came up with the necessary components to create this 'Arcano-Bomb'.

The first objective was to obtain unstable magical isotopes that the Legacy Chain were studying in one of their hideouts on the Rogue Isles. After a successful raid on the hideout, you acquired the explosive components for the bomb.

The next objective was to recover electronics components for the trigger mechanism. Since the Cage Consortium has been having problems with the Freakshow raiding their facilities, Henri thought it would be best to take out two birds with one stone. He sent you to take down and rip the electronics components from Freakshow cybernetic implants. You accomplished this task and returned the components to Henri.

Henri directed you to take the components to Tarixus. With a twirl of magical energy he created the Arcano-Bomb!

Taking the Arcano-Bomb, you planted it in a Circle of Thorns temple deep underneath Potter's Field. After escaping the lair, Henri set it off - only to find that it only affected the spirit world! While it took down a number of Circle of Thorns, it did nothing to the actual land that made up Potter's Field. It turns out Tarixus had other ideas that did not involve the welfare of the Cage Consortium.

Ancient Sorcerer

Archmage Tarixus is an ancient sorcerer who has always existed on what is now known as Potter's Field. His mortal body has long since passed on, leaving only his ghostly spirit. It's said that the Circle of Thorns tried acquiring power over him at one time, but Tarixus quickly put them in their place.

Initial Contact
I am Tarixus, and I am an old soul. You come to me not by chance, but by fate. There are grand designs at work, machinations beyond your wildest dreams. You seek power. I can provide you with that power - if you do my bidding. Submit to my will and you have much to gain. Refuse, and you can wallow in your shallow existence from here until time's end. The choice is yours.

Story Arc
Souvenir: Strong Soul

It all started when the ancient sorcerer Tarixus spoke to you of a ritual that would give his ghostly form more power over the world of the living. In order to enact this ritual, he needed to create a magical artifact called the Blackwand. The construction of such a device was detailed in a book called the Abyssal Tome, an ancient book you acquired from the Legacy Chain.

Tarixus began gathering the components necessary for the Blackwand by sending you to gather primordial essence—coral shards gathered from the Slag Golems on Sharkhead Isle.

Next you tracked down a Scrapyarder leader who was an unwitting descendant of the ancient Mu civilization and gathered some of his blood.

You then invaded a gathering of Freakshow in an attempt to reacquire ancient Mu relics. The Freakshow were unsuccessfully trying to unlock the secrets of the relics when you arrived, and you quickly overcame them.

The final item needed for the Blackwand was the soul essence of a defeated hero. Tarixus sent you to a Longbow base where you took down the hero known as Agent X and stole his soul essence.
Briefing

While few things tie me to this mortal plane, there are certain objects to which I am inextricably bonded. One such object was looted from Potter's Field by a grave-robber, taken from the Rogue Islands to Paragon City. There it has fallen into the hands of sorcerers from the Tsoo, who seek to unlock its secrets.
Briefing

Over the centuries I have made pacts with various entities, bartering for secrets. Now payment is due on one of my pacts, and I have a plan that will satisfy the bargain while eliminating one of my old rivals. There is a rogue mage among the Circle of Thorns known as Akarist, currently under protection by Longbow. I wish to offer his soul in place of my own!

The Circle of Thorns and I have a history of death and destruction. At this juncture most of the Circle in the Rogue Isles have realized that I am not someone who can be trifled with. Still, there are some who wish to control my spirit form as a weapon against their enemies. I have sensed a certain Circle mystic attempting to overcome my arcane defenses, and I want him squashed like the bug he is.

Briefing

Time passes and Tarixus remains, as constant as the rising sun or the flow of tides. My existence is ephemeral, but does not need to be. Through rituals and ancient magics, I can be granted more power over the world of the living. Such is my desire, and through my will this shall come to pass.

There was once an artifact known as the Blackwand. It channelled dark magics in ways that broke barriers between live and death.This artifact is required for the ritual I wish to perform, but it has long since passed from this world, destroyed by those that feared its malevolent power. But there are other ways to achieve my goal. There exists ancient lore that details how the Blackwand was forged. Through manipulations that reached across the centuries, that lore has been brought to my doorstep, here on the Rogue Isles. The fools that possess it do not realize what this lore is capable of, their feeble minds puzzling to unlock the most trivial of secrets. I bid you now: go forth and retrieve the Abyssal Tome from the Legacy Chain vaults.

Mission Acceptance
Ah, the Abbyssal Tome. It preserves many nearly forgotten rituals, preventing them from passing into oblivion. The Legacy Chain must have thought they could harness its power. They are fools - I am glad I let it fall into their possession.
Briefing

I have consulted the Abyssal Tome you acquired from the Legacy Chain, and found there the components necessary to forge the Blackwand. Once the Blackwand is created, we shall gain much power.

First, we must harvest the primordial essence contained within the manifestations known as Slag Golems. Defeat 20 Slag Golems and return to me with the coral shard fragments they possess.

Mission Acceptance

The creatures you hunt are animated by the power of the coral shards, mere automatons. Be swift and merciless.

Mission Objective(s)

* Defeat 20 Slag Golems

Debriefing

And to think that these mere shards were once part of an entity so great... 'tis no matter.

Acquire Blood of Mu
Briefing

The plans for building the Blackwand continue. The book you acquired from the Legacy Chain details what we require for the task. The coral shards you harvested from the Slag Golems provided us with primordial essence. Now we require someone possessing the blood of the Mu.

The Mu were an ancient race that possessed strong mystical talents - their legacy lives on in their descendants. Most do not realize the power in their blood, but with my magic I can discern the truth. I have found one close by, a Scrapyarder leader known as Steeltoe Joe. Go to the Scrapyarder hideout and bring me an extraction of his blood.

Mission Acceptance

I care not for the man, only for his blood. The blood, you see, is compulsory.

Mission Objective(s)

* Defeat Steeltoe Joe

Debriefing

Excellent. Yes, I can sense the power of the Mu within the blood. It will do nicely.

Retrieve Mu relics from Freakshow
Briefing

The pieces are falling into place. You have retrieved the Abyssal Tome, the Coral Shards, and the Blood of Mu, all essential for the creation of the Blackwand. Next we need certain relics from the ancient Mu civilization, technology that works in ways that you cannot comprehend. Sharkhead Isle housed some of these relics, but the scavengers known as the Freakshow have stolen it for themselves, hoping to unlock the secrets so that they can use it for themselves! Retrieve the Mu relics from the Freakshow.

Mission Acceptance

These fools dabble with technology they don't understand. Retrieve the relics before they break something.

Debriefing

These Mu relics are the remnants of a once great civilization - how the mighty have fallen. No matter.

Gather soul essence of defeated hero
Briefing

The components for the Blackwand are now almost complete! The Abyssal Tome, Coral Shards, Blood of Mu and Mu Relics have been gathered by you, and it comes time for one last task. The soul of a hero is full of potential, capable of achieving great things and changing the course of the world. A soul like this has great power... power we can harness for ourselves!

Mission Acceptance

Once the hero is defeated, reciting an incantation of a soul crystal will gather his essence.

Mission Objective(s)

* Gather the hero's essence

Debriefing

It is always best when soul essence is fresh. It is most potent then.

Forge the Blackwand
Briefing

You have gathered the Abyssal Tome, the Coral Shards, the Blood of Mu, the ancient Mu relics, and the Soul Essence of a defeated hero. The time has come to forge the Blackwand!

You must go to a place of power, an ancient temple deep beneath Potter's Field. Few know of this place, but once you cross the threshold the wards will be broken and the energies of the temple will call out to those sensitive to mystic vibrations. You will be beset by the Circle of Thorns and their demonic allies, but you must win through to the ritual chamber containing the Obelisk of Yendor. Enacting the charm of making will take great concentration, but when it is complete the power of the Blackwand will be ours! I will then use the Blackwand as a conduit to transfer the energies of the Mu temple to me!

Go now to forge the Blackwand. I have prepared the components for the charm of making, but they will only retain potency for so long. You have 90 minutes to complete this mission.

It will be worth your efforts. Do not doubt me.

Mission Objective(s)

* Forge the Blackwand (Timed, 1:30)

Temporary Power

Upon successful completion of this mission, a villain will earn the Blackwand temporary power.

Debriefing

As you completed the ritual, I channeled the power of the Mu temple to me! My strength grows!

You have proven yourself to be a powerful ally. Keep the Blackwand, and use it to break your enemies.
